Dirty Work

Granddaughter Autumn spreads and dries soil samples from different growing areas on the farm. Each crop has specific soil, and nutrient requirements.  We take our samples post harvest when the soil is depleted in order to determine what inputs are necessary for next season's planting.

After drying, each sample is screened and sifted to remove rocks, roots, and large clumps of soil.

The sample is then bagged, numbered, and sent to the lab at Penn State for analysis.

Plants, like our blueberries, are also evaluated by testing foliar tissue samples in order to determine if the plants are utilizing the available nutrients.

Deer Munchies

When we ramped up vegetable production for the CSA program three years ago, deer were only occasional visitors to the vegetable beds.  They did some damage, mainly to the lettuce and chard, but were little more than a nuisance.  Each year since, they have broadened their palates, and returned with successively more family and friends.  This season we have reached a threshold with the damage and a deer fence will be the first priority for next year.

This week's shares will include Zucchini, Carrots, Spaghetti Squash, Anaheim Peppers, (a mild variety of chili peppers) and Brussels Sprout Greens.  These greens are similar in appearance, and are used the same in cooking, as the collard greens you received earlier in the season.

Dealing with our deer problem is bad enough, but this new four legged menace invading Pennsylvania is a real threat.
