Thirsty Cattails

Our extended dry spell is most evident along the edges of the farm's two irrigation ponds.  Shown above, even the cattails are being challenged to get a drink.  The normal waterline is at the top of the stalks where the parched straw color meets the still green sections of the plants.  This is almost four feet from the current waterline.  The ponds are as low as we can remember seeing them.

Frog Out of Water

Normally, the pond's frog population is well concealed in the shoreline vegetation.  Now, with the water so low they are conspicuous, and much easier prey for the Great Blue Herons (and farm photographers) stalking the pond's edges

CSA News

Although area fast food restaurants are pushing pumpkin flavored drinks, Halloween costumes are being advertised, and Christmas lay away plans are available in many stores, here at the farm we are happy to be part of the natural seasonal cycle rather than the artificial one of advertisers. This weeks shares reflect that natural cycle continuing with summer produce in this week's shares.  Included this week are: Green Bell Peppers, Zucchini, Yellow Onions, Red Kale, Tomatoes, Sweet Basil, and the last Sweet Corn of the season.  Once again, we are including local, non organic Corn.  Members may make a substitution for the Corn if desired.

With Labor Day approaching it seems appropriate to highlight a current situation involving farm workers in the U.S.  The article linked below from the Christian Science Monitor includes the plight of migrant dairy workers, ice cream, and a victory for farm labor organizations.
