Coming Clean
Almost all family size farms rely on some source of non-farm income to keep the operation viable. Our farm is no exception. One of the revenue supliments we continue to developed is our Fresh Little Farm Girl line of artisan soaps and body care products. With blueberry season behind us, we were able to spend a few days indoors this week making soap, and replacing diminished inventory.

A Field Hand Pollinating A Squash Blossom
The first thing each morning we "scout" the fields to determine each crop's development stage. As we scout, it has been encouraging to see so many native pollinators hard at work. They are particularly evident against the yellow, and gold colors of our squash blossoms.
2015 CSA
This week marks the half-way point for both full, and core season members. Last Saturday was the fifth distribution for core members, and this coming Saturday is the tenth for full seson members. The cool, cloudy, and at least somewhat rainy past few days also signaled the mid-point transition to late summer. We also saw the first goldenrod blooms, and heard the first cricket chirping on Tuesday. Farmers have long obseved that it will be six weeks from the first cricket chirps until the first frost. There is some variation season to season, but the obsevation is generally true. All these indicators give us a hint of the fall weather soon to come.
Before we start thinking too far ahead though, we are glad to still be enjoying a nice mix of summer produce. This week's distribution will include. Red Cabbage, Carrots, New Gold Potatoes, Lacinato Kale, Patty Pan Squash, and once again coventionally grown Sweet Corn.

Although there are many harmful ingredients in personal care products that prompted us to begin making our own natural and organic soap, one that is particularly dangerous to the environment is microbeads. We have linked to the Story of Stuff Project's videos in past newsletters highlighting the hidden external costs of consumer goods, as well as to their other videos on environmental and social issues. The link below takes you to the project's website where you can view their latest video on the dangers of microbeads for our health, and our environment. After watching this two minute message, you may want to help "Ban the Beads." Read More
