Final Act
This past Tuesday marked the final gleaning, and the end of this season's blueberry harvest. The crew then turned their attention to removing the bird exclusion nets from the fields.
Packing Up
The nets are cut in 200 ft. sections and stuffed into oversized feed bags
Ready For Pick Up and Storage
We remove the nets as quickly as possible after harvest to protect them from the elements in order to extend their lifespan.

 Germinated Beets
Even as we wind down blueberry season we are still planting for fall CSA distributions. We germinated these beets in starter trays as shown in the photo above
Ready To "Pot On"
After germination, each plant is "Potted On" into an individual cell to gain size and strength
Six Pack
After the beet's root systems have reached the capacity in each six pack cell, they will be planted in the field. The plan is to have the beets at a perfect young, tender stage for late season CSA distribution.
CSA August 8th
This week's distribution will include Butternut Squash, Red kale, Collard Greens, Green Bell Peppers, Candy Onions, and Sweet Corn
Please Note! The sweet Corn is NOT Certified Organic. This weeks share will include corn from Weiser Farms in Girard. Sweet corn can be grown organically but the amount of pests, and attendant hand labor required, make it unrealistic (for us at least) to produce. Anyone wanting a substitute for the corn please let us know and we will accomidate you.

Available at the Farm Store |
Sugar Baby Although we weren't able to get enough of these Sugar Baby Watermellons from Clarion River Organics to include in the CSA shares, we were able to bring in a few cases to offer at the farm store. We will also have extra Sweet Corn, and we were able to get a few non-organic tomatoes from Hulings Greenhouse located just around the corner from our farm. Our tomatoes are bigger every day but these cool nights we have been experiencing are not helping with the ripening.

Since we are able to offer watermellon in the store this week we thought this story was timely and interesting. The article linked below uses a renaissance painting to show how plant breeding has changed the nature of the foods we now take for granted.
