Transition Time
We timed our vegetable planting around blueberry season.  The photo above shows Richard tilling the beds that produced the early season crops in preparation for the next wave of plantings that, (weather permitting) will be distributed in the fall.  This season is our 20 year anniversary of being Certified Organic.Throughout that time we have delivered our blueberries to many other CSAs and Co-ops in the tri-state area.  Because of those relationships we have formed a network including many other local (within 100 miles) Certified Organic operations.  As we deliver, or have berries picked up, by our organic partners we will take advantage of their specialty crops and include an increasing percentage of their produce in our store, and in the CSA distributions.  This type of network is becoming increasingly popular among CSA operations as it provides members with the greatest possible variety, quality, and reliability in their shares.

 Almost Ready
The first wave of ripening is quite evident.  After the berry has turned blue it takes five additional days for the sugars to fully develop.  Most berries you buy in stores never get those five days.  They are picked early to withstand mechanical picking, shipping, and warehouse delays.  Our fully sweet, ripened on the bush blues will be ready for harvest next week. Depending on the variety, this is three to five days behind our average start time.

Most Hunter Farms' customers are not in favor of GMOs in our food, or our environment.  Regardless of where you stand on the issue almost everyone agrees current regulatory oversight is woefully inadequete.  As reported in the article linked below, the Obama administration is about to address the thirty year long GMO regulatory limbo.
