Bee Keeping Workshop
As we announced in last week's newsletter, Al Machinski, our farm's beekeeper, foremost in the photo above, presented a workshop to area beekeepers at the farm last Saturday. Attendance was higher than expected and Al's expertise was very much appreciated by the group. This week's Interesting Link, found at the bottom of the newsletter, is an article highlighting the challenges faced by beekeepers everywhere, and specifically those in our area.

Wanderer
We saw this snapping turtle lumbering past the farm store. It was headed for the pond so we figured that we were gaining a new resident. Instead of taking the plunge, the itchy footed reptile skirted the pond, and disappeared into the East blueberry field. It may have been simple wanderlust, but this time of year we suspect it was a female searching for a sandy spot to lay her eggs.

As mentioned in the Farm News above, beekeepers everywhere are facing difficult issues. Crop pollination by domestic honey bees is critical for the production of many of the foods we eat. The article linked below highlights the dilemma faced, and decisions made by Pennsylvania's largest commercial beekeeping operation near Pittsburg, and how it will affect the price and availability of many foods.
