Assembly Line
After attending the Penn State workshop on Shiitake Mushroom propagation, described in the 3/19/2015 newsletter, we located suitable trees for the project, cutting them while they were still dormant. Now, after selecting the strain of mushroom we believe will be the best producer, and securing the necessary tools, we set up an assembly line to inoculate the logs with an actively growing mushroom culture.
Stacked and Ready
The inoculated logs are stacked at the end of the assembly line. Next, they will be taken to a heavily shaded site in the woods that is well protected from drying winds. The first harvest should be in a little over a year from now.

Spring color
When walking along the field edges, or into the woods, it's impossible not to notice these beautiful rose colored hues dotting the forest floor. Last season's acorns have absorbed the spring rains, expanded, and ruptured their coats. Prominent in the photo above are the tentacle like radicals, the embryonic roots.

In last week's newsletter we featured a story about drones being used as a tool addressing the problem of reforestation on an planet wide scale. Keeping with a high tech, planet wide theme, and acknowledging the 45th anniversary of Earth Day coming up next Wednesday, the article linked below tells how the USDA is using satellite technology to gather soil moisture data around the world.
