Freshly Dug Blueberry Plant

In addition to growing blueberries for market, we also propagate blueberry bushes for sale. Although most of our sales occur in the spring, when people are planting and working in their yards, autumn is the ideal time to plant bushes. The plants we are offering for sale this season are of the Blue Crop variety. They're five years old, have multiple canes, and are absolutely loaded with fruit buds. Autumn planting, while the plants are still in dormancy, allows sufficient time for them to acclimate, resulting in far less stress than when planted in the spring. This results in a much higher chance of having a significant harvest during the following summer. In addition to the blueberries themselves, the plants make wonderful ornamentals, with beautiful white blossom-clusters in spring and rich, mahogany-colored leaves in early autumn. We only keep a few on-hand this time of year, but are able to take orders for as many plants as you would like. They are priced at $30 each. If you are interested, please give us a call at 814 840 4370 or email us at hunterfarms@yahoo.com.

CSA News

We are still receiving input from members and are not quite ready to announce next year's program, but we can say that from the input received thus far and from our own records, one trend is very clear: the CSA model works best and is enjoyed by shareholders most during the high growing season. As a result, we will likely shift our emphasis away from the earliest spring and latest fall distributions when crop variety is limited in order concentrate on the summer season when maximum crop variety is available. Please continue to share your feedback and check future newsletters for details of the 2015 CSA.

Here at the farm, we have been fighting invasive plant and insect species for years. Perennial pests like the Japanese beetle, recently introduced species like the spotted wing drosophila, and looming threats such as the brown marmorated stink bug inflict crop damage, reduce yield, require labor and expensive organic treatments to combat, and ultimately raise the cost of food. Unfortunately, our crops are not the only local resource at risk. As a recent Erie Reader article details, the invasive round gobi, a voracious fish native to the Black and Caspian Seas brought to US waters in ship ballast, is currently poised to decimate the incredible diversity of plant and animal life in French Creek. If this ecological tragedy is allowed to happen, they may soon find their way into the vast lower Mississippi watershed with devastating consequences for its native species populations. For more information, check out the link below to the Erie Reader article by local author and Audubon member Mary Birdsong.
