Stirring the pot

After harvesting each crop, we take soil samples in order to determine which nutrients need to be replenished. Using a lab-recommended pattern, numerous samples are taken from each field and separate crop-growing area. The samples are combined, sifted, dried, and shipped to the lab at Penn State's main campus for analysis. All field inputs such as iron, zinc, magnesium, etc. are based upon the lab's recommendation for specific crops in specific areas.
CSA News

Once again, we'd like to thank all who participated in the 2014 CSA Early Season and welcome all newcomers to the Late Season. We look forward to providing you with another season full of the freshest, highest quality organic produce in the region.

CSA Distribution Bin Reminder

As a continuing reminder throughout the season, we ask that all CSA participants please remember to return their distribution bins each week. Sustainability and food safety are of supreme importance to us, and these reusable bins, which are sanitized each week, are an important part of our efforts to operate in a sustainable, responsible manner. We very much appreciate your cooperation. Thanks!

Additional Share Options

Please note that egg, cheese, and coffee share options are still available for CSA members. Members who sign up are guaranteed product availability as well as a reduced price on these items. For details, check out the CSA page at HunterFarmsOrganic.com.

Above you see newly-harvested yellow onions in the beginning stages of curing. Unlike the fresh onions CSA members have been enjoying throughout the season, the curing process allows enough moisture to be drawn from the onion for these to be safely stored for a longer period of time and creates an onion with a slightly bolder, more concentrated flavor. After they've spent about two weeks curing, they'll be ready for enjoyment throughout the coming winter.

The share list for the 2014 CSA's 14th week includes:

sweet potatoes

Available at the Farm Store

This week we have a very exciting new addition to the Farm Store: beautiful, hand-thrown pottery by local artist Mel El-Farouki. These pieces are lovingly crafted, each one a unique work of art. As a bonus, all of the items you see above are functional as well as aesthetically-pleasing. El-Farouki's pieces currently in stock at the Farm Store include honey pots, berry bowls, and spoon rests.

We continue to stock two gourmet, seasonal flavored coffees from Happy Mug Coffee of Edinboro. Locally roasted by Happy Mug owner Matt Shay, they're delightful compliments to crisp fall days. According to Shay, Apple Pie is a smooth, sweet coffee with a hint of fresh, juicy apples and Pumpkin is akin to creamy warm pumpkin pie in your coffee mug, almost enough to make someone who doesn't like coffee change their mind. These limited-time coffees are available while supplies last at the Saturday Store. Stop out and pick some up!

Weekly Special

This week we're featuring fresh, delicious salsa from Beelzebub's Salsa of Cambridge Springs. Stop out to the Farm Store, located at 7269 Sterrettania Road in Fairview and stock up!
