Richard speaking at Thursday's PASA master class
|
Sustainability education and outreach are critical aspects of the Hunter Farms mission. Earlier today we were very happy to share information and experiences regarding sustainability by hosting a PASA (Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture) master class on organic blueberry production and diversified farming. The fifteen PASA members in attendance toured the fields and facilities and engaged in discussions on a wide range of topics. Guest speakers included Jessica Roberts, founder of the Hunter Farms CSA and Al Machinski, resident beekeeper. It was a great event that we hope was helpful and informative and we look forward to more gatherings of like-minded individuals interested in engaging in and improving upon the art of responsible farming in our region.

CSA Distribution Bin Reminder
As a continuing reminder throughout the season, we ask that all CSA participants please remember to return their distribution bins each week. Sustainability and food safety are of supreme importance to us, and these reusable bins, which are sanitized each week, are an important part of our efforts to operate in a sustainable, responsible manner. We very much appreciate your cooperation. Thanks!

Notwithstanding global climate change, the weather dictating each year's growing season can vary quite a bit and this year is no exception. We at the farm have been anticipating summer favorites such as tomatoes, sweet corn, and peppers as much or more than anyone, but the growing season is anything but average. Unfortunately, we are significantly behind seasonal averages in "growing degree days." Growing degree days are a measure of heat accumulation farmers and horticulturalists use to estimate a plant's progress toward full maturity. Although you'll see tomatoes and peppers in this week's distribution, we are still uncertain about the inclusion of sweet corn. As a reminder, our sweet corn is provided by neighboring farmer Andy Sabol and although it is not certified organic, it is low spray and we are willing to wait for Andy's crop because he is the most conscientious grower of corn we know in this region. As was the case last year, we're happy to allow anyone who does not desire conventionally grown corn to swap for an alternative item. Once Sabol's corn is ready, expect a steady supply of delicious sweet corn.

Available at the Farm Store |
As a reminder, we are still continuing to stock two recent new additions to the farm store, both created in collaboration with Eric Laughery of Beelzebub Salsa. They're unique culinary experiences you won't find anywhere else. The first is Beelzebub's brand new Blueberry Salsa, made with Hunter Farms Organic Blueberries just picked from our fields. It's as fresh as fresh can be and unlike any other salsa we've tried. Of course we're biased, but if you already love our berries and Beelzebub's salsas, we think you'll love the combination.
In addition to the blueberry salsa above, we also have a limited supply of pickled organic asparagus grown here at the farm and pickled using a unique recipe Laughery crafted just for us. It's a twist on asparagus you won't soon forget. A little sweet, a little spicy, and incredibly full of flavor, we think it's another winning combination.
