Farm News

We're excited to announce the first two items in our new line of children's soaps. Like all of our Fresh Little Farm Girl products, we use only the highest quality, organic vegetable oils. Where Kidz Sudz differs from our other products is what we've left out. The new bar and foaming hand soaps contain no fragrance oils. Although we use only pure essential oils to gently scent our Farm Girl products, we know that parents concerned with sensitivity to these scent-producing oils can go to great lengths to find a simple, pure alternative that promotes health and cleanliness. We believe these two great new additions to the Farm Girl family truly support our claim to the "Purest Soap in the Country".

CSA Distribution Bin Reminder

As a continuing reminder throughout the season, we ask that all CSA participants please remember to return their distribution bins each week. Sustainability and food safety are of supreme importance to us, and these reusable bins, which are sanitized each week, are an important part of our efforts to operate in a sustainable, responsible manner. We very much appreciate your cooperation. Thanks!

The first tomatoes of the season are here and although they may look unfamiliar, they're juicy and flavorful. These beautiful slicing tomatoes come courtesy of our friends at Clarion River Organics. Some are more ripe than others, so we advise you keep them in a cool (50-65 degrees), dry place until they reach the taste and texture you prefer.

Blueberry Grunt

Summer weather can make your kitchen too hot for using the oven. But thanks to Cook's Country magazine, you can make this fabulous dessert in a flash without breaking a sweat! Similar to a cobbler, and inspired by the English steamed pudding, this simple recipe highlights fresh summer berries and a melt-in-your-mouth, fluffy buttermilk dumpling. Just make sure to use fresh blueberries, as frozen berries will make the filling watery.

INGREDIENTS

Filling
8 cups fresh blueberries
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest from 1 lemon
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice from 1 lemon
1 teaspoon cornstarch

Dumplings
3/4 cup buttermilk
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

METHOD

1. For the filling: Cook 4 cups blueberries, sugar, cinnamon, water, and lemon zest in Dutch oven over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until mixture is thick and jamlike, 10 to 12 minutes. Whisk lemon juice and cornstarch in a small bowl and add to the blueberry mixture. Add remaining berries and cook until heated through, about 1 minute. Remove the pot from heat and cover to keep warm.

2. For the dumplings: Melt butter in a liquid measuring cup and allow to cool slightly. Add buttermilk and vanilla to the measuring cup and stir. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and 6 tablespoons sugar in a large bowl. Slowly pour the buttermilk mixture into flour mixture, using a rubber spatula to gently fold ingredients until a dough forms.

3. Using a small ice cream scoop or 2 large spoons, spoon golf ball-sized dumplings on top of warm berry mixture. Wrap lid of Dutch oven with clean kitchen towel (you can tuck the corners of the towel under the lid to keep it tight) and cover the pot. Keep your towel away from the heat source! Simmer gently until dumplings have doubled in size and toothpick inserted into center comes out clean, 16-22 minutes.

4. Combine cinnamon and remaining sugar in small bowl. Remove lid and sprinkle dumplings with cinnamon sugar. Serve immediately.

Notes: A kitchen towel beneath the lid absorbs condensation during cooking. Without condensation, the dumplings will be light and fluffy. Just make sure to secure the towel to the lid! Also, if you don't have a Dutch oven, use a large stockpot instead.
Available at the Farm Store

As a reminder, we are still continuing to stock two recent new additions to the farm store, both created in collaboration with Eric Laughery of Beelzebub Salsa. They're unique culinary experiences you won't find anywhere else. The first is Beelzebub's brand new Blueberry Salsa, made with Hunter Farms Organic Blueberries just picked from our fields. It's as fresh as fresh can be and unlike any other salsa we've tried. Of course we're biased, but if you already love our berries and Beelzebub's salsas, we think you'll love the combination.

In addition to the blueberry salsa above, we also have a limited supply of pickled organic asparagus grown here at the farm and pickled using a unique recipe Laughery crafted just for us. It's a twist on asparagus you won't soon forget. A little sweet, a little spicy, and incredibly full of flavor, we think it's another winning combination.
