Although harvest is still roughly two weeks away, we've begun to install barrier nets designed to keep birds out of our blueberry fields. This process is labor intensive, but it provides 100% protection for the crop without using the synthetic taste aversion spray used by many non-organic growers. In many ways the blueberry crop is the lifeblood of Hunter Farms and we fully believe that any and all efforts to protect the crop are more than worthwhile. In a few weeks when we're all enjoying the first berries of the season, we are sure you'll agree.

One of the best aspects of CSA membership is the unique opportunity to witness the variety the seasons have to offer and enjoy ever-changing distributions that reflect this change. This week's distribution represents a transition from a predominance of spring greens to early summer crops like cauliflower that require a little longer to mature. As seen in the list below, many new items herald the arrival of the summer season and we hope, like us, you're looking forward to all that's to come.

Conventional and organic farmers often butt heads. When it comes to what constitutes responsible farming, opinions vary widely and some of them can be quite divisive. That being said, very few conventional farmers are villains and not all organic farmers are saints. A recent Washington Post article discusses farmers and agricultural advocates who are working hard to reach compromises and an understanding in an effort to bridge the gap between these all-too-often adversarial groups and settle on farming practices that are truly sustainable and responsible, regardless of the often arbitrary labels placed upon them. We support this healthy change in perspective and think it could be of great benefit to farmers, consumers, and the environment. Check out the link below to learn more.
