Farm News

Farming presents a wide array of challenges to conventional and organic farmers alike; soil fertility, pests, disease, and weeds threaten the livelihood of all farmers. Although it comes at the cost of the health of the land, the produce produced on that land, and ultimately the consumer, synthetic chemicals provide a shortcut for conventional farmers to deal with these issues. On organic farms, one of the most difficult challenges is efficient, ecologically-sound weed control. Luckily, we have the Weed Badger at our disposal. This powered, hoe-type implement is capable of snaking even the hardiest weeds from around plants, freeing them from weeds that compete for water, sunlight, and nutrients, and accomplishes in a space of days what would require weeks of manual labor. It's of limited utility in the vegetable rows where crops are more delicate and tightly spaced, but it is a lifesaver in the blueberry fields. The Badger is truly an invaluable piece of equipment for organic farmers.

Link of the Week
The debate surrounding the causes of global warming rages on. Whether the result of a long-term natural cycle or short-sighted, environmentally-damaging human behavior, it's clear that the earth is steadily heating up. According to data recently released by NOAA, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, May 2014 was the warmest May since the group began compiling records in 1880. This unsettling news is compounded by the possibility of this becoming the single warmest year on record. If the earth experiences a strong El Nino event as is predicted, 2014 could be go down in history as the hottest yet. Regardless of the cause, we here at the farm believe that engaging in meaningful conservation efforts is wise. With the future of the environment, food supply, and humanity in potential peril, why not hedge our bets? Check out the link below to learn more.
