With blueberry and vegetable plants here at the farm on the verge of flowering, pollination season will soon be upon us. This week, apiarist and friend of the farm Al Machinski delivered several hives of bees to help complete this crucial task. Al's operation, Porter "Buzz" Run is located very near to the farm in McKean and you may recognize the name from the excellent Porter "Buzz" Run Raw Honey we stock at the Farm Store.
Unfortunately, we aren't the only ones that enjoy Al's honey. On Monday, we found several hives knocked from their bases, one reduced to splinters. It seems that a hungry black bear took an interest in the hives and their nutritious contents. The bear consumed the vast majority of the honey and brood in the compromised hive, rendering it a complete loss. Luckily, this is as far as he or she got before moving on. We don't know if this furry bandit will be back for more, but you can be certain we'll be keeping a close eye on the hives in the near future.

Every five years, the US Department of Agriculture compiles and releases data from their Agricultural Census. The result is a massive collection of data, nearly 700 pages in printed form, that serves as a snapshot of the state of farms, farmers, and farming in America. The link below contains six of the many beautiful and informative heat maps created from the recently released census data that illustrate current and interesting trends in farming. These include the geographic distribution of female farmers, the average age of the typical farmer, and the relative proportion of family and corporately-owned farms. Check out the link below to learn more.
