 | Blueberry Buds, May 2014 |
Now that April has come to a close, Erie is officially the snowiest city (with a population over 100,000) in America. While it's nice to receive some recognition and acknowledgment for the adverse conditions we've collectively weathered, the extreme winter has had a delaying effect on plant life at the farm. As a visual example, above we see photos of blueberry buds from early May, one from last year and one from earlier today. As you can see, the plants are quite healthy, but development and swelling of the flower buds are significantly delayed, roughly two weeks behind average. Year to year variance is expected, but the extended cool weather has set the blueberries and many of the spring crops back far more than in previous years.

Weekly Special
This week at the farm store, we're featuring creamed honey from Vorisek's Backyard Bee Farm in Linesville, PA. For those who have never had the pleasure, creamed honey is 100% pure honey which has been induced to crystallize under controlled circumstances. This results in a smooth, spreadable, fine-grained texture. We love it on toast, but aside from the unique, non-drip texture, it can be used just like ordinary honey. This week only, six and nine ounce jars, normally priced at $4.49 and $5.99 respectively, will be on sale at a discounted price of $3.49 and $4.49.
Open Saturdays 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

This past Tuesday, retail giant Walmart announced commitments by more than a dozen of its largest retail suppliers to establish and meet agricultural sustainability goals. These partners, some of the largest players in the agriculture industry, include Monsanto, General Mills, and the Dairy Farmers of America. While we appreciate these organizations seemingly leveraging their enormous wealth and influence to effect positive environmental change, it is yet to be seen if these will be meaningful efforts or promotional stunts aimed at improving the increasingly environmentally-sensitive public's perception of some of the most egregious environmental violators currently in operation. Check out the link below to decide for yourself.
