Farm News

Signs of spring continue to emerge here at the farm.  Last week the crew uncovered the herb beds, removing straw that insulated and protected the plants from wind and cold during the long, harsh winter.  Miraculously, young green chives, oregano, and parsley are already popping up.  It may seem premature to have exposed these tender plants, but the vast majority of the newly uncovered herbs are frost hardy, so they should survive any lingering winter weather.  As the season progresses, we'll soon see the return of the thyme, lavender, and rosemary we use in our Fresh Little Farm Girl soaps.  We're already looking forward to sharing and enjoying these flavorful herbs and all the rest of the bounty to come.
Wildlife
Tree Frog

Pictured above, spring peepers are a common tree frog in the region whose distinctive call is widely recognized as a harbinger of spring.  Three days ago we heard their song for the first time this year, a promising sign that spring-like weather is just around the corner.  We look forward with great anticipation to tilling, planting, and the rebirth that spring brings to the natural world.

After such a long and trying winter, we're very excited to announce a harbinger of spring, the start of our annual Blueberry plant sales.  Plants are available in three sizes: one year old plants are priced at $10, two years at $20, and three years at $30.  They're potted, so they'll be hale and hearty until you're ready to get them into the ground in your yard or garden.  Stop on out and grab one or a dozen.  We're happy to answer any and all questions you may have to help ensure your plants are healthy and productive for years to come.

Stop on out and get it before it's gone!

Link of the Week
In an article soon-to-be published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology, Penn State Smeal College of Business faculty member Karen Winterich and a team of colleagues outline a scale that measures and examines consumer motivation for purchasing environmentally-friendly products.  One of the central findings of the article detailing the so-called "GREEN scale" is that individuals who are concerned about responsible use and reuse of natural resources tend also to demonstrate similar financial prudence.  Despite the persistence of myths concerning natural and responsibly-produced products -- e.g. that they are less effective and more costly than their less-environmentally sensitive counterparts -- buyers who are motivated both by environmental concern and actual economic value are able to see through these and other common misconceptions. The staff here at the farm found the concept of the GREEN scale to be an interesting opportunity to examine our own motivations both as consumers and purveyors of goods designed with low environmental impact. Does the scale take your buying motivations into account?  Perhaps your priorities differ. Check out the link to learn more and let us know what you think.
