It's time to replace the hydraulic fluid on our trusty workhorse of a tractor. This facilitates the use of many invaluable farming implements as well as provides us the opportunity to highlight a great program we're proud to be a part of. The Natural Resources Conservation Service, formerly the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, provides incentives to farmers dedicated to conservation of the land and local watersheds that support them. One such incentive is designed to encourage farmers to recycle lubricants and fluids, such as used oil and hydraulic fluid. We here at the farm believe recycling is a valuable tool in the preservation of the environment, locally as well as on a more grand scale, and programs such as this ease the burden of recycling difficult-to-dispose-of materials.

As mentioned above, recycling is important to us at the farm. An abundance of recyclable household items, however, often find their way into the trash and ultimately landfills because people aren't aware that they're recyclable or don't know how to go about recycling them. This week's link is aimed at shedding some light on opportunities for recycling unconventional recyclables. The Erie County Recycling Center's e-Waste and Hazardous Household Waste Collection Days are designed to help you rid your home of recyclable materials like computer parts, wiring, batteries, paint, and appliances. The next date is this Saturday, April the 5th, just in time for early spring cleaning. Check out the link to learn more about this valuable community program.
