Farm News

The photo above highlights the roller coaster weather patterns we have experienced this winter.  In years past we always switched out equipment from one job, then outfitted the tractor for the next.  We normally hook up a ballasting box to hold the coils of hydraulic lines on the pruner.  The box replaces the back blade seen here.  The blade is used to plow out the driveway and access the farm's buildings.  With so many snowstorms and thaws back to back this year we have stopped switching and left the tractor equipped for both jobs on a permanent basis.

Although the extreme winter weather has made it difficult to complete tasks in the fields we  appreciate and enjoy the beauty of a good "old fashioned " winter.  Our farm is bordered on the East by Elk Creek.  The photo below shows one of the many huge ice slab stacks left along the banks by the latest thaw and flood.

CSA News

Thomas Jefferson was an ardent supporter of small scale, local farms.  He believed the United States should not rely on foreign sources for our food.  He also believed democracy was best served by independent farmers and business people rather than large companies.  The CSA model serves these ideals.  If you would like to read a few quotes by Jefferson on agriculture click on the link below.

Link of the Week

The link below reveals one of the many risks to the environment from allowing genetically modified organisms, (GMOs) to be a part of agricultural production.  Over 90% of US corn and soybean production now uses GMOs.  Implicated in the article, Monsanto's "Roundup Ready" genetically engineered seeds are the main source of GMOs in US farming. This report focuses on the threat to Monarch Butterflies.  Monarchs, unlike many other species that may also be impacted, are migratory and have long term tracking and population studies documenting their decline since the use of GMOs became widespread.
