We have had too much snow on the ground lately to allow any field work. This short, seasonal break provided an opportunity to catch up on some reading. As mentioned in last week's newsletter, Dr. Miller was the keynote speaker at the Pennsylvania Association For Sustainable Agriculture Conference. Her trans-subject knowledge of farming, nutrition, and medicine positions her uniquely to address the connection between soil health, and human health. She asserts that well raised food not only improves our health, but it can also heal many modern day maladies. A Harvard Medical School Graduate, Dr. Miller uses science based data from researchers around the world to support her conclusion. I recommend this book to anyone interested in looking at food as medicine. |
The number one question we still receive from prospective CSA members is what happens when they can't pick up their share. We recently modified our policy and added the option described below in this repeated entry from a previous newsletter
We receive many inquiries about what our policy is for members who are unable to pick up or receive their share on a particular week. We have always encouraged designating friends or relatives to be substitute recipients. When that was not possible we donated the share to the Second Harvest Food Bank in the name of the shareholder. We are now offering a third option. If members are unable to take their share and choose to, we will give credit in the amount of that week's share value. The credit amount will be deducted from the following season's CSA cost when the member signs up. We try to continually refine our policies to offer maximum flexibility while still maintaining the structure and form of a true CSA.

This month is when many scientists expect the first contaminants from the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster to reach the west coast of the US. While there have already been migratory blue fin tuna tested and confirmed to have elevated levels of radioactivity, no resident fish contamination has been proved. There are many differing opinions on what will be the extent and severity of the contamination. As would be expected, many articles reflecting extremes in estimates and claims can be found on the web. The article linked below from MSN news avoids the extremes and provides an overview of the situation.
Proponents of renewable energy are always confronted with shortsighted statistics showing the high costs associated with large scale projects and programs. The initial costs for renewable energy are high. Those costs compares quite favorably however when environmental, social, and human health costs are figured into the price we pay for fracked natural gas, coal burning power plant pollution, and nuclear waste disposal and catastrophic accidents.
