Long-time newsletter subscribers may recall past mention of the various wildlife habitat areas we maintain here at the farm. Above you see a shot of our five-acre plot of warm season grasses, designed as a habitat for threatened ground-nesting bird species. This area has a particular and unique beauty in the winter; the array of native plant species serve as an interesting counterpoint to the endless stretches of imported European grasses that dominate the local landscape. We feel this sort of effort serves an important environmental purpose as well as beautifies the land with which we're entrusted. We hope you agree.

This week, we'd like to direct your attention to a new feature of our website. Accessible via the "Newsletter" tab on our website (located at hunterfarmsorganic.com) or directly through this link, we've created an archive of all of our Hunter Farms Newsletters, from their inception to the present. This archive offers the opportunity to look back at each week's CSA box contents, a feature we think will prove very helpful for potential CSA members looking for a rough idea of what shares will look like in 2014. It's also filled with great reminders of the fantastic first season of the Hunter Farms Organic CSA. Check it out and let us know what you think.

As a continued reminder, the sign-up period for the 2014 CSA Season has officially begun. Order forms can be found below and at the farm's website at hunterfarmsorganic.com/csa.html. Please don't hesitate to call us at 814 840 4370 or send us an email to hunterfarms@yahoo.com if you have questions or need assistance of any kind.

For fruit growers, the consequences of the historic cold snap experienced by much of the country earlier this month may just now be surfacing. According to a report released last week by Purdue University, subarctic temperatures may have damaged fruit buds already present on fruit-bearing plants. Blueberry plants are quite cold tolerant relative to other fruit bushes and trees and we have yet to see any evidence of damage here at the farm, but other growers in our region may not have been so fortunate. Check out the link below to learn more.
