Budding Blueberry Bush

The first blueberry harvest is months away, but we're already thinking about next season. Bud set is an excellent indicator of what the coming season will hold and from what we see so far here at the farm, the 2014 blueberry crop looks very promising.  Above you can see a beautiful, spiraling bud enlarged many times.  We'll begin trimming bushes very soon to ensure that they're strong, healthy, and in prime condition to provide an abundance of the delicious berries we all love.

New at the Farm Store

Reversible Holiday Apron

Courtesy of Ann Turko of Fairview township, we have several new holiday gift items at the Farm Store.  Ann's one-of-a-kind aprons, smocks, and scarves are handmade with incredible attention to detail.  Both the aprons and smocks are reversible and we now carry men's designs for barbecuing in the back yard and cheffing around the house.  Stop by the store at 7269 Sterrettania Rd in Fairview, Saturdays from 9 am - 5 pm and check them out.

CSA News

We are pleased to share this personal thank you we received from Mariana at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwestern Pennsylvania.  Hunter Farms has always contributed to the Food Bank, but our entry into vegetable production has allowed us to give a wide variety of healthy produce to needy members of our community.  Our CSA members who were unable to pick up their shares agreed to donate them to the Food Bank.  When possible, a separate donor's receipt was sent to each individual CSA member.  Whether or not the Food Bank was able to do that for each donation, we wanted you to know how much each of your contributions was appreciated.

Also, as a reminder, the sign-up period for the 2014 CSA Season has officially begun.  Order forms can be found below and at the farm's website at hunterfarmsorganic.com/CSA.html.

Link of the Week
A recent study conducted by scientists at the University of Washington State shows that organic milk has significant nutritional advantages over milk from conventionally raised cows.  In addition to the lack of hormones and antibiotics in organic milk, it was shown to have a higher level of Omega 3 fatty acids, an essential component of the human diet associated with healthy metabolism and numerous health benefits. We here at Hunter Farms believe in the quality and value of organic foods and it's good to see scientific evidence to support this belief.  Check out the link to learn more.
