Wednesday brought an unexpectedly warm day and we took full advantage of it. This included sanitizing the posts used to prop up tomatoes, peppers, and other crops that have a difficult time supporting their own weight. Above you see Richard tackling the job. This precautionary measure helps to ensure no pests or disease gain footholds in the fields. The posts are all packed away for the winter now, but before we know it they'll be out and deployed in the vegetable rows again. We can't wait.

Charlie Vorisek stopped by this week to special deliver a tasty new product from his Backyard Bee Farm. Creamed honey is produced by whipping and precisely controlling the natural crystallization process of honey which results in a smooth, spreadable product that does not drip at room temperature. Like all of the honey products we carry, it is pure honey and contains no additional ingredients. Vorisek's Backyard Bee Farm Creamed Honey is available in 6 and 9 oz jars at the Farm Store. Come visit us Saturdays from 9 am until 5 pm at 7269 Sterrettania Rd in Fairview.

We're happy to announce newly available Hunter Farms gift certificates (pictured above). Beginning this Saturday, they'll be available in any amount of your choosing and are good for all products available at the farm store. These certificates can also be used to purchase CSA shares for friends or family or to provide a charitable donation to the Second Harvest Food Bank. These gift certificates are a great way to introduce someone new to the fresh, local, and organic products we offer here at the Farm. |
Many newsletter subscribers have already contacted us to begin the CSA sign-up process and we're finally ready to receive deposits. As mentioned last week, we ask a 10% deposit of $27.50 per share, per half-season. This deposit is payable via cash (at the farm), check, credit card, or PayPal. Please contact us via email at hunterfarms@yahoo.com for an electronic invoice if you would like to pay online or send payment to PO Box 478, Fairview, PA 16415.
The order form can be found below and at the farm's website at hunterfarmsorganic.com.

In 2005, an experimental mishap led biologist Michael Skinner to a sensational discovery: the great-grandchildren of rats that had been exposed to an agricultural fungicide showed the harmful aftereffects exposure three generations down the line. Skinner continued to study this phenomenon and found that the animals consistently carry signs of exposure to toxic chemicals for many generations. Although from time to time there may be cosmetic blemishes on the produce brought up from our fields, reading the recent article in Smithsonian magazine (link below) makes us feel even better about omitting the use of harmful agricultural chemicals that could have negative consequences for our grandchildren's grandchildren and beyond. Check out the article to learn more.
