Frankferd Farms is a family-owned operation in western Pennsylvania that specializes in organic, local, bulk, and specialty foods. You've seen their high-quality products in the store for many weeks in the form of Organic Pancake, Cornbread, and Scone mixes and the Blue Corn Tortilla Chips that pair perfectly with Beelzebub's Salsa. Their organic baking supplies are also used in the fresh baked goods we offer each week in the store.
We now extend to you a product that is one of our favorites: Amish Butter Rolls. These two pound rolls are available salted (perfect for sliced bread with a hot bowl of soup) and unsalted (which are best used in baked goods and pastries) at the price of $12. If you would like to order one or more rolls of Amish Butter, please send us an email by Friday, November 1st, and we will have them delivered to our store on Wednesday, November 6th. They will be available on Saturday, November 9th for pickup.

As we mentioned last week, this week's newsletter will be accompanied by a survey about the 2013 CSA. We've learned during this first CSA season and are very interested to hear how our shareholders felt about the program. We would love your feedback in order to make next year's program even more successful. If you are unable to complete the survey or have additional feedback, feel free to send us your comments and questions via email.
Also, stay tuned for more information on next year's CSA. The program details will be coming soon!

Vegetable Fried Rice
Our resident chef tried out this recipe as a quick dinner after a long day. This is a quick meal that serves two with enough leftovers for lunch the next day. This is a fairly simple fried rice recipe that is easily made with any vegetables you have on hand. We had it with cabbage, mushrooms, onions, sweet and hot peppers, and some zucchini.
Ingredients:
1 cup brown rice, cooked according to package instructions
1/2 small onion
1/2 sweet pepper
1/4 cup carrots
1/2 cup broccoli
1 cup cabbage
1/2 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
1/2 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons sesame oil
Method:
1. Cook rice and set aside.
2. Dice all vegetables to about 1/4" thickness. Heat sesame oil over medium heat and add onions, carrots, and green pepper. Let cook until onions soften, then add broccoli and cabbage and continue to cook until broccoli is tender. Stir in soy sauce, vinegar, and garlic powder. 3. Add the rice and stir occasionally for 3-4 minutes. Add salt, pepper, or more soy sauce if needed.

Thomas Jefferson was a renaissance man dedicated to a wide array of pursuits, both intellectual and practical. One such pursuit, near and dear to his heart, was farming. He experienced quite a few setbacks (perhaps more failures than successes) in his experimental quest to bring robust, versatile, and nutritious crops to early America and his persistence and resolve are incredibly admirable. Check out the link to learn more about the farming renegade that was Thomas Jefferson.
