 | Labeling packages is one of the many tasks the crew catches up on during rainy days when it's too wet to pick and pack berries. |

We are very pleased to welcome Tori Simonian to the team as resident chef and baker. This Saturday Tori will share samples of three upcoming baked goods in the farm store: mini blueberry muffins, blueberry brownies, and blueberry-banana bread. Stop by and enjoy a delicious taste of what's to come.

A hungry bee feeds from a ripe blueberry.
|
During the past week, a lack of blooming plants in the region has driven bees of many varieties to seek out alternate food sources. Our resident beekeepers and honey-providers (Charlie Vorisek and Al Machinski) have been supplementing their domesticated bees' diets, but local wild populations have descended on the blueberry fields in droves in order to opportunistically feed from ripe berries. While we ordinarily welcome and encourage all wild pollinators, the bees threaten pickers and slow operations down considerably.

Sweet Corn: Please note that this sweet corn is not certified organic. It comes from a neighbor farmer, Andy Sabol, who we know to use excellent, low spray growing techniques that produce delicious corn. If you do not wish to receive the sweet corn, please let us know and we will find a substitution.

The Spotted Wing Drosophila fruit fly is a pest threat we're monitoring closely at the farm. This non-native, invasive insect targets small, soft berries such as blueberries and raspberries and has been spreading at an alarming rate. We have been fortunate to avoid the damage they're capable of inflicting, but as a notice received just this week from the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences Extension details, our neighbors to the south and east have been less fortunate. We hope it doesn't become necessary, but there are organic remedies and we stand prepared to deal with this spreading threat. Check out the link for more information.
