Greetings from the farm.  It's hard to decide between a canoe and a tractor.  Most of the last several years we spent our time doing rain dances, but now we'd like to shut off the spigot.  While the rain and unseasonably cool weather are great for some crops like lettuce and broccoli, it makes it hard to weed, plant, and mow.  Fortunately, we're still able to get out in the fields and get some work done.

Wildlife
Cecropia Moth

The crew came across this beautiful moth in the vegetable field.  The Cecropia Moth (Hylaphora cecropia) is the largest moth in North America, and can have a wingspan of five to six inches.  It feeds on trees, favoring maples, oaks, and poplar.

The first share is just two days away!  Here's an update:

Construction
Our office driveway: a work in progress

We regret to inform you that due to the extended rainy period, the farm stand driveway, which we had intended to have paved for the first day of pick-ups is still under construction.  Please be aware while parking, and if you bring any kids along for the first pick-up.  We apologize for the inconvenience.

Friday morning we will hit the fields even earlier than usual to begin to harvest the veggies in the coolest part of the day and get them washed, sorted, and packed for pick-up and delivery on Saturday morning.  We do our best to harvest as close to your pick-up as possible, ensuring quality, flavor, and nutrition.

The whole crew is excited for our first harvest day!

A reminder (as seen in last week's newsletter): Receiving your first share

When: Saturday, June 15th, 2013

Pick up: Pick up from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hunter Farms 7269 Sterrettania Road, Fairview, PA, 16415

Deliveries: Our driver will begin deliveries at 9 a.m.

What to expect: The address shown above is for the house, but you will actually come to the Farm Stand and Office.  This building is located south of the house on Sterrettania Road, and the driveway is marked with a large Hunter Farms sign.  I will greet you, and I will have a helper on hand to retrieve your box from our cooler where it will be held until your arrival.

Your share will packaged in a FDA approved, food-grade plastic crate.  Each shareholder will borrow their crate for the week, and the expectation is that you will return your clean, empty crate each week in return for the full crate.  While we initially hesitated to use plastic, unlike packaging used in other CSA operations (i.e. waxed cardboard or wood) these crates are food grade, easy to clean and sterilize each week with certified organic hydrogen peroxide, and should be useful to our farm for years to come.  When they reach the end of their usefulness, they are recyclable in Fairview Township.

Your share will also include a printed newsletter that will provide a list of box contents, news from the farm, and some recipes that will inspire you to cook with the contents.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Link of the Week

We came across this article in the June 2013 Patagonia catalog, and took note because there is fracking in our backyard, too.
