Second Smart Schools Public Symposium in
Buffalo, New York on Wednesday, September 17 Additional Speakers Announced

Come hear technology and education experts discuss innovative, successful approaches to school and community connectivity and technology-enabled education practices that can help to reimagine New York's public schools for the 21st century during the second Smart Schools Symposium.

Currently scheduled speakers include:
- David Salway, Director of the New York State Broadband Program Office, will provide an overview of the state of broadband access in New York state along with specific examples of successful school and library connectivity projects.
- Tiffany Zhou, Data Analyst at EducationSuperHighway, will present the latest national research regarding broadband access in schools, with specific emphasis on how schools can remove roadblocks to high-speed internet and promote digital learning.
- John Windhausen, Executive Director of the Schools, Health and Libraries Broadband Coalition (SHLB), will discuss the Coalition's work to help address the shortage of adequate broadband for anchor institutions and their communities and how communities can leverage high-capacity "Middle Mile" broadband networks as jumping off points to serve surrounding residential and business consumers.
- Brenda Lehman, Technology Coordinator for the Marcus Whitman Central School District, will discuss the steps that her rural school district in Ontario County took to get all of its schools and students connected to the internet.
- Dr. Peter Turner, Dean of Arts and Sciences at Clarkson University, will discuss the importance of broadband connectivity to STEM readiness with an emphasis on a unique collaboration in the North Country, the St. Lawrence STEM Partnership, an effort that connects higher education and K-12 education stakeholders to enhance educational and economic opportunity for disadvantaged students.
Under the leadership of Governor Cuomo, the Smart Schools Commission will lead a research effort into best practices into technology-enabled education and broadband connectivity efforts.
In preparation for the Commission's final report that will be developed in Fall 2014, local and national experts will present best practices for the Commission's consideration over the coming months at public symposiums and Commission meetings.
