Rachel Ramsay  |  August 2016
Rachel Ramsay is Assistant Professor of Digital Design at Dixie State University. She works to enhance the opportunities for her students, and future students. Rachel graduated from Dixie State in 1995.

"I enjoyed that Dixie felt like the next natural step and is part of the community," she said.  "I have close family ties, both my grandparents on my father's side both attended Dixie. Both my parents' graduated from Dixie and two siblings that graduated from Dixie as well. I loved my Dixie experience because of my close ties."  When she graduated her father was the Alumni president (93-95) so he was able to hand Rachel her degree. Dixie was small enough that she felt the personal attention and enjoyed her classes.

"What I do now is & before I began teaching directly affects my current career because of the important aspects I learned in digital design and communication." Rachel took a two week course during a summer that allowed her to have an experience with graphic design helped give her the direction she wanted to go. She created a national youth program, Girls Go Digital, to enable young girls to have a positive hands on experience with technology and digital programming.

We are excited to see many of you in Northern Utah for our annual Dinner and Silent Auction.

November 19, 2016 at 6:00pm. This year it will be held at Thanksgiving Point in the Great Room. This event is free for you and a guest.

Dixie State alum, Keeshya Cox, leads the Utah Falconz semi-pro football team into the IWFL championship game for the second year in a row.

"I always expect to play well, but I didn't think I would have that kind of game," Cox said. "I'm a big competitor and am always looking to work on different aspects of my game to get better. That always keeps me going and it always helps when you are playing for a spot in the championship game."

The former Dixie State University basketball player has always been a sports fanatic growing up and quickly fell in love with football as she watched family and friends play at Dixie High School as well as Hansen Stadium, which is now Legend Solar Stadium.

"I was always around football and enjoyed going to all the games and practices with my friends and family," Cox said. "I always wanted to play against the boys, too, because I wanted to play against the best competition."

New bacteria discovery at biological research lab at DSU could prove revolutionary

New bacteria discovery at biological research lab at DSU could prove revolutionary
A new discovery by Soft Cell Biological Research at a Dixie State University lab is considered a breakthrough in science when it comes to finding bacteria in blood.

Soft Cell Biological Research founder Brent Hunt, in cooperation with DSU students, have been testing L-form bacteria for the past two years. The studies have proven that the bacteria can virtually survive in the blood for years, with no cell walls, and goes undetected.

The researchers have tested over 500 human blood samples and have since discovered over 150 new bacteria.

Jamison Sorenson, named as new Snow Canyon High basketball coach

The Hurricane High and Dixie State alum is now back in Southern Utah as the new head coach of the Snow Canyon boys basketball team, which means at least three Region 9 teams (SC, Cedar and Pine View) will have new head coaches.

But the biggest reason for Sorenson coming back to Utah was family.

"We thought it would be a great idea to start getting back home towards friends and family - eventually that was the plan anyway - and a good opportunity presented itself," Sorenson said shortly after the school announced the move in April.

University's $1.98M grant aims to get disadvantaged kids to college

Dixie State University's educational talent search program was recently awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Education totaling $1.98 million.

Starting in September, the grant will provide Dixie State $396,000 per year for the next five years to help the institution serve 825 first-generation and low-income students in the Washington County School District.

The program, which has been at Dixie State for 26 years, has received consistent funding in the past. However, the funding over the next five years will be an increase over the $379,019 it received per year over the past five years.

Dixie State University receives $75,000 grant to reach out to Latino community

Dixie State University recently received a $75,000 grant from the Utah State Board of Regents' Office of Outreach and Access to help the Latino community meet their educational goals.

"We are very excited about the opportunity to reach out and cooperate with other educational providers in the county to enhance and increase participation for the Latino community in the mired of opportunities in St. George," Daneka Souberbielle, Interim Director of Intercultural Engagement at DSU, said.
