Oak Grove recognizes STARS

Oak Grove Elementary has joined Lake Road and Eugene Field in implementing the Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support program designed to reward students who are meeting and exceeding building expectations.

Through the new program that goes by the acronym STARS, students who are spotted by staff doing something exceptional earn points which they can use to purchase prizes in a makeshift store set up monthly. Classes can also earn reward parties. The store is funded by the Parent Teacher Organization as well as the Latch-Key program.

"If you put in those positive expectations, maybe you'll ward off the negative behavior by bringing more attention to the good things," Principal Jenifer Richardson explained. "It feels good to be praised so other students take notice."

Upon meeting the required staff buy-in quota, Richardson joined her SW-PBS team and attended a summer training institute in 2015 and proceeded to collect data last school year. Implementation of the action plan kicked off this year with an Olympic-themed boot camp that was designed for students to rotate through stations that defined expectations in various school settings such as the lunchroom and the bus.

The final component of the program is the Monday morning celebration during which students learn the behavioral focus of the week. Students are encouraged to wear their STARS T-shirts supplied by school sponsor Poplar Bluff Realty.

Richardson credits her staff for the early success of the program. First grade teacher Sheila Henderson commented that she enjoys "starting the week on such a positive note." The biggest benefit third grade teacher Hilary Taylor sees, she added, is the "consistency of the new building-wide approach to classroom management."

STARS stands for: The expectation is for our Star students to Take responsibility, Always be safe, Respect yourself and others, and Strive to do your best.

$20K raised during 6th Pink-Out Day

A total of $20,000 was raised for the United Cancer Assistance Network during the sixth annual Pink-Out Day, which took place Friday, Oct. 14, at the Mules Football game.

Pink-Out Day is a citywide event founded by the PBHS Student Council. Citizens participate in a T-shirt fundraiser, the proceeds of which go toward UCAN, a nonprofit organization that provides monetary support for local patients receiving cancer treatment.

Community leaders tour new facilities

About 100 supporters were hosted at each new campus during the Middle School and High School ribbon cuttings held last week in cooperation with the Greater Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce.

The ceremonies celebrated the substantial completion of the anchor projects of the historic buildings plan made possible by the passage of the 2014 levy measure that resultantly added 200,000 square feet across campus.

The plan promised and delivered on addressing four critical needs, officials noted: to combat overcrowding, meet the growth of the community, modernize antiquated classroom facilities, and improve the safety and security of students.

Past Superintendent Chris Hon spoke at the Senior High ceremony Thursday, Oct. 13, stating that he was happy to lead the charge and "give something back" after being afforded the privilege of serving the school district for 16 years, the majority of his tenure in public education.

Dennis Young of Ittner Architects, the professional planner the school board hired over the district-wide project, mentioned that educators often inquire about the construction that has taken place in Poplar Bluff, and he replies that it was a "community-based master plan." The process began with a Long-Range Planning Committee in 2011, then expanded to include a Citizens' Advisory Council in 2013 representing a cross-section of patrons.

Building a new high school was not financially feasible it was determined, Young recalled, so the committee members opted to swap the High School and the Middle School campuses, and add grade four to the upper elementary configuration freeing up space at the four lower elementaries. A FEMA grant was secured at the Junior High to jumpstart the 20,000-square-foot expansion project there.

On Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the Middle School ceremony, Superintendent Scott Dill commended the community for investing in itself again with new school facilities that will impact generations to come. Board President John Scott thanked the many individuals who helped reach the milestone, R-I's first new levy in over 30 years, including the taxpayers who made the sacrifice for Poplar Bluff's future.

Following the dedication, a tour of the 40,000-square-foot addition of the Middle School was led by the student Safety Patrol, while the National Honor Society led a tour of the 132,400-square-foot addition of the High School.
