Welcome back to The eMule! Here is the latest news from the Poplar Bluff R-I School District to help start out the 2016/17 academic year on the right hoof.
Welcome back, students!

The 2016/17 school year kicked off Thursday, Sept. 1, with construction wrapping up on about 200,000 square feet of new academic space across the district as a result of the successful levy measure.

Enrollment is tracking nearly 150 more students than the beginning of last school year, according to reports, continuing the upward trend anticipated a few years ago in a demographics study of the district.

Superintendent addresses district employees

More than 700 Poplar Bluff R-I certified and classified employees attended the district's back-to-school convocation on Monday, Aug. 29, at the Black River Coliseum.

In his first state-of-the-schools address, Superintendent Scott Dill, who comes by way of Houston, Mo., called the community's investment in its infrastructure and school facilities "astounding" and "unheard of."

Besides the great strides the district is making, part of Dill's decision in accepting the position to succeed Chris Hon beginning in July, he noted, was to provide more opportunities for his own daughters, Caroline and Maura, who are enrolled at the new High School and Middle School.

"To me this [job] is personal. Y'all have my kids in the system too," said Dill, "and I wouldn't have it any other way."

He received an ovation when he stated he does not plan to lead "from behind a desk," he will be highly visible in buildings and classrooms. "I'm in this business for kids," said Dill, later adding: "If we fail, society picks up the debt."

To kickoff the annual event, the presentation of colors was performed by the JROTC; teachers Tom and Brenda Allen and their son Joshua sang the national anthem; the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Charlie Raglin and Alyssa Cochran of Lake Road Elementary; and the pastoral community-who Pastor Greg Gilberto of Northpoint Nazarene Church referred to as the "God squad"-delivered a prayer.

Thanks to all of the vendors for giving out door prizes, and members of the Board of Education for their participation as well.

Thousands celebrate their Mule Pride

An estimated 3,000 people came out to support the Mules as they opened the 2016 football season on Friday, Aug. 19, with a dominant victory over Riverview Gardens at the new multi-sport stadium on the high school campus.

Preparations for the Mules Stadium opener were accelerated a couple weeks prior to the commencement of the school year in order to coincide with the schedules of competing high schools, which resumed classes earlier. The surrounding walking track should be completed next week, according to architects.

"While our athletic facilities serve as the front porch to campus, it is important to note this state-of-the-art stadium only makes up a fraction of our buildings plan, the completion of which will be celebrated with a series of ribbon cutting ceremonies in October," Roger Burton announced during a special recognition ceremony on the field prior to kickoff. "More than 200,000 square feet have been added to our classroom facilities across the district, impacting students grades 1 through 12 for generations to come."

The public is invited to attend a series of ribbon cutting ceremonies at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the Middle School and 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Senior High. Building tours will follow.

At halftime of the football game, the district also expressed its support for the community's first responders including law enforcement, firefighters and ambulance services. "Your work will always be appreciated in Mule country," the announcer recited.
