NASA specialist teaches students about outer space

 

              

John Weis, National Aeronautics and Space Administration education specialist over the aerospace education services project, visits Oak Grove Elementary School on Thursday, Feb. 28, to teach fourth graders about space food. Weis, who is based out of the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, later presented to students at the 5th & 6th Grade Center before putting on a workshop for area teachers at Three Rivers College.

 

 

Teachers, Marble Slab partner on St. Jude fundraiser

 

      

Teachers of the 5th & 6th Grade Center served $1,250 worth of ice cream on Thursday, Feb. 28, 20 percent of which went to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, making for the most successful fundraiser Marble Slab Creamery has participated in to date.

PBJHS poetry slam held

 

 

A poetry slam was held Thursday, Feb. 28, among eighth grade communication arts teacher Candace Warren's junior high classes during which students recited either a poem they wrote or memorized by another author. The audience snapped their fingers before and after the performance, just like what may be done during an open mic event at a coffee house. Parents volunteered each hour to serve refreshments.

  

The top winners of each class, as determined by a panel of PBJHS judges, will move on to the poetry slam finals this week. Finalists are: Oscar Adams, Crystal Blech, Mallory Weitzel, Sami Carpenter, Drew Brown, Lexi Riddle, Lance Hewett, Scott McGee, Jaid Sanders and Ashley Jennings. Pictured above is Chelsea Becker.

Beta Club makes large donation to Animal Shelter 

 
 

The Poplar Bluff High School Beta Club was presented a plaque Tuesday, Feb. 26, on behalf of the Poplar Bluff Animal Control Division for making a large donation of pet supplies to the city's Animal Shelter. An annual tradition, the Beta Club donates items such as pet food, litter, toys, treats and newspapers to the Animal Shelter as a service project at the beginning of each year.

 

 

JROTC shines during recent drill competition

 

             

Poplar Bluff High School Junior Reserve Officers' Trainings Corps placed first in three categories-color guard, squad with arms and squad without arms-during a recent drill competition against several surrounding schools held at E.T. Peters Gym.

Science Fair

Several qualifying PBJHS students will compete in the 57th Annual SEMO Regional Science Fair on Tuesday, March 5, at Southeast Missouri State University's Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau.

 

Project Graduation

A parent meeting re: Project Graduation will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in the Senior High Student Center. All are welcomed. If parents want to work Project Graduation, they are required to attend at least one regularly scheduled monthly meeting.

 

The Bully Effect

CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360" documentary "The Bully Effect," which features a photo from Poplar Bluff's Stand for the Silent chapter, will re-air at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 9.

 

Pancake Breakfasts

The Poplar Bluff Stand for the Silent chapter will host a pancake breakfast from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at Applebee's for $5. Proceeds support the student-led anti-bullying organization.

 

SEMO Sluggers Traveling Softball team, 12 and under, will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 7:30-11:30 a.m. Sunday, March 10, at Myrtle's Place at 109 N. Broadway. The cost is $6. Children three years old and under eat for free. Proceeds go to tournament fees and uniforms. For more information, call 573-429-1959.

 

March Board Meeting

The next school board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in the Administrative Building. The regularly scheduled monthly meeting is open to the public.

 

Anti-Bully Week

Stand for the Silent founder Kirk Smalley, who was featured in the critically acclaimed movie "Bully," will visit junior and senior high on Thursday, March 28, to wrap up anti-bully week.

The premiere edition of our district magazine is coming this spring!

On Monday, Feb. 25, KFVS12 aired a news segment about the progress of our anti-bullying efforts at junior and senior high.

 

Kait8 also aired the segment about our Stand for the Silent chapter.

 

On Tuesday, Feb. 26, KFVS12 ran a press release about a FEMA grant we received for a safe room at PBJHS.

 

On Thursday, Feb. 28, Kait8 ran a photo release about the Beta Club making its annual donation to the Animal Shelter.

 

KFVS12 also ran the photo release about our Beta Club being honored for its charity along with a release about a NASA specialist visiting the school.

 

"The Bully Effect," featuring a photo from Poplar Bluff's SFTS chapter premiered on CNN's Anderson Copper "360."

 

On Friday, March 1, Kait8 ran a photo release about our out-of-this-world visitor.
