New Fire Safety Act Introduced
 
On February 15th, Bill 4, the new Fire Safety Act was introduced with the goal of modernizing the regulatory framework for fire safety in BC.  The new Act will result in the repeal of the Fire Services Act. Read more  
Local Government Feedback on RCMP Contract
 
As part of the 5 Year Review of the RCMP contract, UBCM has collected feedback in order to best represent local government interests to the provincial and federal governments. UBCM's February 2016 submission addresses not just the RCMP contract, but also general issues and concerns with policing in British Columbia. Read more  
Recruiting, Keeping Doctors a Community-wide Effort 
 
Playing a role in red carpet welcome programs and facilitating community visits are just two of the ways that BC local governments are collaborating with community-based groups of family physicians (divisions of family practice) and their partners to help recruit, and keep, family doctors practising in their communities so patients receive quality care. Special Wine Store Licence Conference Call 
 
Local governments are invited to participate in a provincial teleconference to discuss the legislative authority and regulations that provide for special wine store licences, including the sale of 100% BC wine from grocery stores. The teleconference will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2016. Read more 
Reaching Diverse Audiences in Public Engagement 
 
When engaging the public, elected officials want to hear from residents who reflect the full perspectives, knowledge and identities of their communities. One of the biggest public engagement challenges is reaching such diverse audiences rather than just the "same ten people," as well as addressing barriers that prevent some groups from actively participating.
