Elections Legislation Introduced    

 

UBCM President Rhona Martin joined Minister Coralee Oakes last week to announce the introduction of two bills that will implement recommendations from the 2010 Local Government Elections Task Force.  Read more       

2014 Advocacy Days Underway in Victoria      

 

UBCM's Executive is in Victoria this week to raise awareness of the challenges facing the local government finance system in B.C.  Drawing from a report that received unanimous endorsement by UBCM's membership at the 2013 Convention, the Executive aims to build support for the province to work jointly with local government to strengthen the finance system. 245 Problem Vessels Identified in BC  

The data collection for the Problem Vessels Inventory is now closed. Transport Canada would like to thank all those who contributed. The inventory resulted in the identification of 245 vessels of concern, geographically distributed as follows: 37% Vancouver Island; 28% Gulf Islands; 25% Coast (Sunshine Coast north to Prince Rupert); 9 % Lower Mainland, and; 1% Strait of Georgia.  Read more

Smoke-free Outdoor Places Webinar  

The 'Smoke-free Outdoor Places' webinar is designed for local governments that are considering the benefits, drawbacks and process of prohibiting smoking in public outdoor places. The April 8th webinar will include discussion of additional benefits to restricting smoking including socially protecting young people and supporting people who are trying to quit.  Read more
Sneak It In Week  

The Ministry of Health's 'Healthy Families BC' (HFBC) and ParticipACTION encourage organizations to shift the focus of health promotion to their own staff, even if just for 10 minutes a day.  Sneak It In Week runs from April 7-11 and encourages all employees to become more physically active throughout their workdays.  Read more
