Tax Increases, Property Sales Proposed to Balance Budget         

 

Yesterday Minister Mike De Jong tabled Budget 2013, announcing a shift from a deficit to a surplus position in 2013-2014. In order to attain balance, Budget 2013 will increase the general corporate income tax and the personal income tax for high earners. The budget also includes a plan for the scheduled sale of 100 government properties to generate an estimated $800 million in revenue.  Read More

Ferry Assessment Agreement Provides Certainty    


An assessment agreement between BC Ferry Services Inc. and BC Assessment will provide certainty to local governments that are home to 50 ferry terminals throughout British Columbia. The agreement provides new general assessed values for the terminals and will ensure stable property taxes for local governments over the five years of the agreement. Read More   

Minister Lake Updates UBCM on Land-Based Spill Framework

The UBCM Environment Committee has met with Environment Minister Terry Lake to discuss the Province's proposed land-based spill preparedness and response intentions paper. While generally supportive of the proposed framework, the Committee took the opportunity to seek clarification around a key principle in the framework - that emergency management is a shared responsibility among federal, provincial and local government agencies.
