Age-friendly Funding Decisions Announced  

 

What do these things have in common: an osteoporosis prevention program, a zoning bylaw review, a community kitchen renovation and a seniors' resource fair?  They are all initiatives being funded under UBCM's 2013 Age-friendly grant program.  Read More 

Electrical Permit Fee Changes Proposed 

 

Local governments are being asked for their feedback on a new fee structure for electrical permits that is being considered by the BC Safety Authority (BCSA).  The new fee structure is intended to reduce the number of permit categories from seven to three.  Read More 

Province Launches Spill Preparedness and Response Consultation    

 

The Province is currently reviewing industry-funded options for strengthening BC's spill preparedness and response policies and capacities. In late November, the Province released a policy development discussion paper on land-based spill response that seeks to create a world-leading regime for handling spills.  Read More

New Medical Marijuana Policy to Protect Citizens 

 

Community safety is identified as a key objective in the introduction of a new federal medical marijuana policy. According to Health Canada, individuals will no longer be authorized to grow marijuana for medical purposes in their homes, reducing fire and safety risks in local communities.  Read More 

Oppal Report Recommends Changes to Policing 

 

Fragmentation of policing services in the Lower Mainland is seen as the main contributing factor in the disappearance of women in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, according to the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry.

 

Overall, Justice Oppal made a total of 65 recommendations in the Inquiry's final report.  Read More 

2012 Convention Minutes Now Available      

 

UBCM's move toward electronic member communications continues.  On January 3rd UBCM distributed a PDF version of the 2012 Convention Minutes to member local governments by email, instead of printing and sending a hard copy by mail.  Email distributions reduce our printing and mailing costs and are consistent with UBCM's move toward a greener, more technologically advanced means of communicating with our membership.  Read More
