Start Your Child's Day

One way to help your children get the energy they need for a busy school day is to start things off with a great breakfast. Sounds easy enough, but kids can be very picky eaters. Here are some tips for what to encourage -- and what to avoid -- for a healthy start:   eating fruit
  • Try to make sure breakfast includes some protein, whether that means free-range eggs, a slice of turkey, or a handful of nuts. 
  • Encourage kids to have fresh fruit in the morning. Choose any fruit they like, and stick with it!
  • Avoid processed carbohydrates like bagels or croissants. Whole grain toast is a healthier option. 
  • Choose cereals that are high in fiber rather than those that are sweet.
  • Nix packaged fruit juices. Instead, offer kids coconut water.
  • If your child does not have nut allergies, switch from dairy to almond milk. Almond milk has more calcium, B vitamins, and protein, and it does not contain any of the hormones or antibiotics found in dairy milk.
