DROUGHT STRESS |
Another heat wave is on the way for this week! Lawns and landscapes continue to be under extraordinary stress from the heat, as well as disease outbreaks and the potential for insect activity. Due to the high amount of rain, combined with high heat and humidity for such a prolonged period, lawns are being affected by outbreaks of diseases, weed and crabgrass problems, as well as drought and heat stress! Your lawn is fairly resilient, however, there will be visible signs as a result of this stress. Don't panic, most damage should recover. If the disease problem is severe enough, additional treatments beyond your normal program may be required. In addition, weed and crabgrass controls can not be applied with such high temperatures. Controls will be applied only when it is safe to do so.
Here are some precautions and tips that can help:
* Raise mowing height to 3 1/2 - 4"
* Mow often to prevent removing too much new growth at one time
* Be sure blade(s) are sharp
* Pick up clippings and dispose, if allowable
* Avoid watering in the evening, early morning is best
* Water deeply and as infrequently as allowable to keep roots deep
* Be sure your sprinkler system is in good working order
* Expect some outbreaks of disease and related damage
(because your lawn is healthy, most damage should recover)
* Have Disease Controls applied if outbreak is severe
