APRIL 2013 NEWSLETTER
April is finally here, however, it still feels like March.  We still need to plan now for the growing season to come.  Mother nature has a strange way of making us respond to weather conditions for our planning.  So, now is the time to prepare our lawns and landscapes for the weather and the season to come, and get those projects going!
LAWN CARE
NOW IS THE TIME TO:

* lightly rake lawns and clean landscape beds

* avoid seeding unless necessary

* apply pre-emergent weed and vegetation

   controls to landscape beds

* mulch top dress landscape areas

* apply fertilizer and crabgrass preventative to

lawns (now through mid to late May)

* prepare,  test and inspect sprinkler systems to

be sure they are ready when we need them

* prune plants that need to be cut back heavily

which will allow them to fill in for the season

* clean and start water gardens

* inspect low voltage landscape lighting fixtures, replace bulbs as needed

* prune roses and butterfly bushes now

* take down bird feeders now, especially if you have bears in your area

* enjoy the beauty of SPRING

APRIL IS OFFICIALLY "LAWN CARE MONTH" IN MASSACHUSETTS...
Governor Patrick signed the proclamation for April officially to be designated as "Lawn Care Month" in Massachusetts.!  This proclamation highlights the important contribution that turf grass provides...

Whereas the healthy plants of both traditional an urban agriculture benefit the people and the environment of the Commonwealth and whereas healthy turfgrass serves as a sequester of carbons from our atmosphere, while providing effective and affordable erosion control and whereas turfgrass aids in heat and noise abatement, fire prevention and storm water abatement and capturing airborne particles such as dust and sand and whereas healthy turfgrass provides a natural playing surface for healthful recreation by all citizens in every community in the Commonwealth and whereas healthy turfgrass enhances landscapes designed by man and nature, offering both serene and peaceful outdoor space.  I Devall Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth proclaim April 2013 to be LAWN CARE MONTH and urge the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.

SPRINKLER SYSTEM SERVICE AND START UP...

After the long, snowy winter, it is especially important to schedule a start up and inspection of your sprinkler system.  There is likely to be some damage to your system due to snow removal.  Our start up service will provide a thorough inspection of the entire system, including: valves, wire connections, backflow device, sprinkler heads, controller, rain sensor,  etc.  This service is the most cost effective way to get your system ready to go.  Equally important is to be sure not to mismatch heads and nozzles.  This will lead to inefficient, water wasting performance.  Although it is tempting to purchase low cost sprinkler heads at the local hardware store, you will end up spending more on wasted water and poor performance.  Your sprinkler system is an engineered and balanced system designed to provide efficient watering!
