PROPER SNOW SHOVELING SAFETY GUIDELINES...
* Be sure you are medically cleared for strenuous
exercise.
* Wear breathable layers of loose clothing. This
will allow you to remove some as you get
heated up. Avoid wearing heavy wool,
manmade materials or those that don't allow perspiration to evaporate.
* Wear good boots suitable for winter use, with good traction and water
proofing. This will keep your feet warm and dry, and can protect you from a
slip and fall injury.
* Loosen up before beginning. Take a few minutes to stretch your muscles and
warm up, no different than before any type of exercise activity.
* Push the snow and avoid lifting as much as you can. You will exert less
energy by pushing than by lifting. If the snow is deep, remove it in layers. It is
recommended to shovel several times if there is a heavy or wet snowfall.
* Be sure to drink plenty of fluids, taking frequent breaks. You should drink
water as if you were working out or jogging.
* Use appropriate equipment whenever possible. You can move more snow
with less effort with the right machine and tools. If all else fails, hire a
professional.
* Treat the cleared area(s) with ice control materials to prevent icing.
