WINTERIZING YOUR WATER GARDEN/POND
It is important to be sure your pond or water feature is properly winterized. If you do not have any fish and do not want to run your feature during the winter, it is recommended to remove the pump and store indoors. Be sure, either, to drain the pump completely, or store it in a bucket of water in a freeze free area. By storing in water, it will keep seals wet and avoid drying and cracking issues. If you decide to keep your pond and waterfall running for the winter, it will offer a beautiful environment. However, some precautions need to be taken. Monitor the following: inspect water fall area(s) to be sure there is no ice damming, which can lead to water loss; be sure water level is maintained to allow adequate water flow to skimmer and pump; maintain an open area in the pond to allow harmful gases from building up and killing fish. The benefits of operating the pond during the winter are not only the aesthetics, but to help prevent the build up of organic waste and harmful gases. The circulation of water will also maintain a clear water environment.
There are a couple of methods that can be used to keep your pond running throughout the winter. A stand alone pond heater will assure an open water area. An option to this would be to install a recirculating pump just in front of the skimmer opening, which will also help to prevent water from freezing. A common method, is to use the existing pump in the skimmer, and redirecting the flow of the pump to the front of the skimmer area dumping the water into the pond just in front of the skimmer opening. An additional plumbing connection would be required for this method. However, the water fall operation would need to be disconnected.

ICE CONTROL PRODUCTS... There are many types of ice control products available in local hardware stores. Some are many things to consider when making your choice. Rock Salt, is very low cost and effective to temperatures averaging 15 to 20 degrees. Rock Salt can be harmful to concrete, as well as lawns and landscape plantings. It will also cause white staining from the residual. There are products used to enhance Rock Salt, which are typically liquid and are sprayed on to the salt, which add significantly to the overall performance, melting point, prevention of staining, safety to lawn, landscape plantings and concrete, and virtually make the salt less corrosive. "Magic Salt" is one particular product which will add these benefits when combined with Rock Salt. "Magic Salt" and other similar pre-mixed products are available in 50 lb. bags at most hardware stores. Some alternate ice control choices are Magnesium Chloride, which will melt to temperatures of -13 degrees; is environmentally friendly; is the least corrosive; will not stain; safe for concrete; and overall cost effective. Another choice is a blend of Magnesium Chloride, Calcium Chloride and Sodium Chloride. This blend of product will yield a melting temperature as low as -20 degrees, and is safe for lawns, landscape plantings and new concrete. The price point is slightly more than Magnesium Chloride. |
