Boulder Valley Dressage Year-End Report

Boulder Valley Dressage had a successful year.   We hosted two shows, the Spring Fling in April at Singletree Farm, judged by Jessica Greer and So Long to Summer in August at Sextant Farm, judged by Kathleen Donnelly.  Altogether, over 80 riders participated in the two shows.  In addition, BVD held two ride-a-tests, one in April at Singletree in conjunction with the Spring Fling, with Julie Haugen serving as the judge, and another in May at Autumn Hill, focused on the new Rider Tests and judged by Sandy Hotz.   Thanks to Sandy's willingness to offer her services at a reduced rate, along with a subsidy from BVD, members were able to participate in the latter event at a significant discount.  Altogether nearly 40 riders benefitted from these two educational opportunities.  In addition, nearly 20 BVD members received subsidies to attend RMDS educational events, including the George Williams clinic in February and the USDF Instructor Certification Workshops in October.

Boulder Valley Dressage members participated in numerous shows throughout the season and we are looking forward to honoring them at our annual awards banquet in January.

On the communications front, BVD members have been able to benefit throughout the year from an up-to-date website as well as the monthly publication of the BVD Newsletter.  Thanks to Gwen Dordick for overseeing both
of these important communication tools, and to Beth Geier who serves as our webmaster.

In addition, Boulder Valley Dressage would like to acknowledge the contributions to the club from the facility owners and trainers who host our events, the board members who help to organize them and especially the volunteer-members without whom we could not put on any of our activities.

Thanks to:

Singletree Farm - Jan Tredwell, Nell Foxworth and Karen Whitman

Autumn Hill Farm - The Wycoffs, Julie Barringer-Richers

Sextant Farm - Stephanie Margulis

Show Manager - Jeannette Hillery

Show Secretary - Beth Geier

Board members -- Sarah Barnes, Stephanie Margulis, Kathie Hibbard, Nicole Donahue, Beth Geier, Julie Barringer-Richers, Gwen Dordick

A very special thanks goes to Jeannette Hillery, who has served for several years as the BVD show manager, along with being one of our most consistent volunteers.  She will
be stepping back from her role as show manager at the end of this year.  In honor of her years of service to Boulder Valley Dressage, she has been named as our RMDS volunteer of the year.  Thank you Jeannette!!

I am looking forward to continuing to be of service to our chapter and the BVD community in 2014.

Have a good ride and Happy Holidays!

Sarah

2013 USEF DRESSAGE SEAT MEDAL FINALS

by Sophie Nasrulla

In August 2013, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to compete at the USEF Dressage Seat Medal Finals in Estes Park, CO, held in conjunction with Paragon CDI.

The Dressage Seat Medal Program strives to build a solid foundation in youth dressage riders by celebrating excellence in position, and helping to develop the fundamentals for correct and skillful training. In a Dressage Seat class, riders are judged only on their equitation and are scored accordingly with a percentage, as you would be in a test. During the class you are asked to perform the walk, trot, canter, and sometimes lateral movements. At the finals, we rode both in a group and did an individual pattern. To participate in the finals, you are required to compete at the semi-finals hosted by your region's Great American/USDF Championships. The top two riders from each region move on to the finals.

Competing in the finals was a fantastic experience. It was amazing to meet people my age who came from all over the country to ride, and between meetings and parties, we had several chances to get to know each other. We had all gone through the extensive qualifying process required to get to the finals, so we were all excited to be there. All of the competitors were kind and supportive of one another, and the USEF and show management truly made the atmosphere fun by putting on events for us to enjoy the entire weekend.

I would recommend the Dressage Seat Medal program to youth dressage riders because it's a great way to compete nationally, without the pressure or investment of showing at the FEI levels. It has definitely been a unique experience to travel to these shows with a different goal besides just riding the usual tests. I like that you still have the opportunity to be exposed to a large show atmosphere and enjoy a different challenge within the discipline of dressage.

Information about the USEF Dressage Seat Medal Program can be found via a link below in the BVD Youth Connection News section of this newsletter.
