Dear Fellow BVD Members,
Welcome to September! With Fall around the corner (at least according to the calendar, if not the thermometer), we can take a moment to look back before looking ahead. Our most recent sponsored event, the BVD "So Long to Summer" show, was a success. Although many riders waited until the last minute to sign-up, once the entries started coming in, we ended up with good attendance. Competitors seemed happy with their rides and scores. A big thank you is due to Stephanie Margulis and Sextant Farm for hosting the show and to Beth Geier and Jeannette Hillery for organizing, as well as to all of our wonderful volunteers.
Also looking back, see Devon Wycoff's article below for a full account of the experiences she and her teammates shared in July when they traveled to Kentucky to compete in the NAJYR Championships. We are so proud of these young ladies and their horses. Coming up on the RMDS calendar, in additional to Championships, don't miss the USDF Instructor/Trainer Workshops, the George Williams Jr/YR clinic and the Annual Meeting. Information on all these events can be found below. Our next BVD meeting will be October 15 at Beth Geier's house. Hope to see you there! Have a good ride. Sarah

The USDF Region 5 Junior and Young Riders represented their region with pride while competing in the 2013 North American Junior and Young Rider Championships in Lexington, Kentucky this past July. This years Junior team was comprised of two rookie NAJYRC competitors, Inga Feungerlings and BVD member, Laine Collins. The Young Rider Team was comprised of NAJYRC rookie Amelia Child from Utah, second time competitor Talia Hershaft and third year veteran Devon Wycoff. Both Talia and Devon are BVD members.
All of the team members arrived at the Kentucky Horse Park show grounds on July 13th, four days before the start of competition. The horses settled in nicely and everyone prepared for a week of hard work in the humid Kentucky heat.
Tuesday was the "jog for soundness" in front of the FEI vets and other officials, and each of the Region 5 horses passed with flying colors! Afterwards, the competitors from all five NAJYRC disciplines attended the opening ceremonies. Each team held their Region's colors high as they entered the stadium in true Olympic ceremonial style.
Afterwards, everyone attended a fantastic party, hosted by neighboring Spy Coast Farm. Each region paraded their creatively decorated golf carts through the Horse Park and then over to Spy Coast Farms. Region Five transformed their golf cart into a good ol' Colorado Prospector's covered wagon complete with pick axes, gold pans, cow bells and of course, GOLD (gold wrapped chocolates), which were tossed to spectators on each side of the road. Their slogan was "Region Five, Prospecting for Gold!". For added fun, any region that managed to have an NAJYRC Official "on board" their golf cart received extra points. Many regions arranged to have judges or TD's on their carts, however Region 5 was lucky enough to have well known FEI Vet, Dr. Mike agree to ride on theirs. As it turns out, all of the judges and TD's bailed on the other regions, leaving Region 5 with the only golf cart to have an official on board. Needless to say, the Region 5 team members were thrilled, and honored! Oh yes, all of the riders AND Dr. Mike were dressed up in Prospector's garb, including beards!
The party at Spy Coast Farm was a blast! All of the competitors enjoyed an evening of good food, music, games, dancing and, of course, a mechanical bull. Of course Devon could not resist but to do her region proud by riding the bull and staying on for over 45 seconds! After a fun evening of team bonding and inter-discipline mingling, Region 5 was off to bed in preparation for the team competition the following day.
First to go for the Juniors was Laine Collins and her horse Superstar, aka. "Joey." Laine and Joey put in a super effort and received a score of 62.459%. Up first for the Young Rider team was Talia and her 12 year old mare Westfalica, aka. "Flica." Talia and Flica both looked great and received score of 64.000%. Inga and her horse Milo went second for the Junior team and they did a terrific job of keeping focused, despite not having a trainer ring side, and scored a 63.811%. Next up for the Young Rider team was Amelia and her 12 year old gelding, Veto. Amelia and Veto had an unexpectedly short warm-up but persevered and received a 65.553%. Up last for the Young Rider team was Devon Wycoff on her 16 year old gelding, Power Play, aka. "Player" (yes, he is a ladies man). Devon and Player put in a solid ride for a score of 68.605%. The Region Five Young Riders were the winners of this years Team Bronze Medal! The Young Rider team was just .27 points away from beating Region 6 for the Silver. The Junior Team had one rider from Region 4, Dallas Van Strattan, to complete a team of three riders. The combined Region 4/5 Team ended up 7th overall, and all were pleased with their efforts at their first ever NAJYRC!
Thursday, all Dressage competitors were given a day off before the Individual Test on Friday. The day was filled with symposiums and presentations for the competitors, the most notable being the "Pathway to the Podium" powerpoint presentation given by Jeremy Steinberg, Robert Dover and Debbie McDonald.
Friday came quickly, along with the Individual competition. Laine rode first for the Juniors, scoring a 60.605% followed by Inga, scoring a 63.395%. Again, both Region 5 Juniors were pleased with their freshman showing at the NAJYRC. Talia was the very first rider of the day in the Young Rider Individual Test, scoring a 65.079%, which placed her 13th individually and qualified her for the Freestyle round, to be held the following day. Amelia and Veto scored a 65.737%, which placed her 10th Individually, also qualifying her for the Freestyle. Devon rode last for the Region 5 Young Rider group, scoring a 68.579%, which earned her a spot on the podium for the Bronze Medal, less than a 100th of a point away from silver. Devon said during the press conference afterwards, "Player gave me 110% through the whole test, and I could not be more proud of him."
On Saturday, the top fifteen Juniors and the top fifteen Young Riders rode their musical Freestyles. First up was Talia, scoring a 63.925%, landing her in 13th place overall. Amelia was next to go, scoring a 67.500%, placing her in 9th place overall. Devon rode last, scoring a 70.00%, placing her just off the podium in fourth place.
Overall, all of the Region 5 riders had solid rides to be very proud of and each made new friends and great memories. Each of the team members would like to thank all of this years team sponsors and everyone who supported their fundraising efforts in one way, or another. In addition, the team members are very thankful for all of the hard work and time put in on their behalf by the Region 5 Chef d'equipe, Heather Petersen and Team Coordinator, Joan Clay.
And of course, a huge thank you goes to the parents for their unconditional love and support!
Speaking of unconditional love, let's "hear it" for all of those fantastic horses too!
CONGRATULATIONS to our Region 5 Riders!
Our Young Riders won Team Bronze!!
Our Juniors placced 7th out of 12 teams.
You have all made our region Proud!

USDF Junior/Young Rider Clinic with
George Williams
at Autum Hill in October
October 26-27, 2013 Autumn Hill IEC is pleased to, once again, be hosting the 2013 Platinum Performance / USDF Region 5 Jr/YR Clinic with George Williams!
In the past, these clinics were limited to FEI Juniors and Young Riders, but now they are open to all Jr/YR's, 14 and older. The rider application deadline of September 13th is fast approaching, so please don't delay. You will also need to provide a YouTube link to a video of you riding at your current level, so now is a good time to get that video posted and the link saved in your computer to attach to your application. In addition to a lesson with Mr. Williams each day, clinic participants will have a lunch lecture (lunch is provided). There will be dinner on Saturday evening for all of the riders, their parents and their trainers, so "save the date" for that as well. Stabling will be available at Autumn Hill for a nominal fee.
The links to the rider and auditor applications are in the flier below. If you are under the age of 14 and feel that you are ready for a clinic of this type, I encourage you to submit your application and a link to a video of you riding, as USDF has been know to "fill" the clinic with younger riders in the event that there are not enough applicants in the preferred age range.
Click here for information about applying to become a rider, deadline for applications is Sept 13th
Autumn Hill is looking forward to having Mr. Williams conduct this clinic, during what we hope, will be a beautiful time of the year in Colorado! Auditors are welcome, and encouraged, to attend.
We look forward to seeing everyone at Autumn Hill for this incredible educational opportunity!
