Medicine Horse Program Meets
the RMDS Team Challenge
by Kathy King Johnson, MHP Executive Director
Medicine Horse Program is a 501c3 charity, specializing in equine assisted psychotherapy. Our donated and rescued horses do double duty as therapists and dressage horses, teaching lessons and sometimes going showing. The RMDS team challenge is one of our favorite venues. This year, we brought more riders than ever before, 7 riders, an adult team and a junior team thanks to our collaboration with Flatirons Equestrian Center.
Every year is new and different but equally fun.
The team challenge is a great show to introduce new horses and riders to dressage, to come out at a new level, or just to get together with your friends and have a good time. Prizes are awarded for team spirit, best use of color, and cumulative high scores for the ridden tests. I admit, our Medicine Horse Program team puts our focus on the former, because if we are bringing out new horses, new riders and moving up to higher levels, we don't have much hope for the scores.

So, first and foremost for our team is the outfit, but cost is critical. Medicine Horse Program put the non in non-profit. With so many riders, we didn't want to ask everyone to buy matching anything. Riders could use their own pads, wraps, browbands and we pooled our resources. All they had to supply was the Hawaiian shirt. Aloha! Any Hawaiian shirt would do, as long as it coordinated with their own gear. We went through parents' closets, resale shops, Walmart, garage sales and Amazon. And we looked fabulous, darling, simply fabulous!
I left the detailing to the grooms, so maybe I wouldn't have bedecked Cowboy with quite so many flowers. Maybe, just maybe, the giant orchid in his tail was over the top. But when I'm required to wear the pink flamingo hat to read, you can't go much further over the top anyway.
Yes, yes, perhaps the time may have been better spent schooling dressage. I had one month to get
the Morgan, Cowboy, who has spent the last 5 years trail riding, to second level. He had never been in a show ring before. Santiago and Julie were showing fourth level for the first time. Four of our riders and horses had never been in a real dressage ring, as we practice at home with poles on the ground. That got dicey, when one horse thought the rail was for jumping and another had his flamingos confused with egress, and walked out of the gate mid-test.
But let me re-define success. I figured if we could get 7 riders and umpteen grooms, parents and adoring fans (and Cathy Baker who counts as all three) to meet at 5:45 am and load 7 horses and actually make it to the show, we were already winners! I was so chuffed I was ready to turn around and come home before we had left the driveway.
I think Woody Allen said attendance is 95% of success. So, we were way ahead there. In dressage, staying on is another big indicator of success. The Medicine Horse Team succeeded 100% there. Staying in the arena is yet another, but that boundary got a little fuzzy.
We won the spirit award! Imagine that. All our hard work paid off. Our riders rode very well. The horses were extremely well behaved, no bucking or bolting, and maybe only one shy. We got around our tests, and most importantly horses and riders had a really rewarding first time dressage experience. We met awesome people from the other teams, some in deelie-boppers and glittery stars. We got to see gaited dressage and western dressage and even a western gaited dressage test. Next year we'd love to see an even bigger show, more upper level rides, and maybe even musical freestyles or a quadrille class. Join us and let's have some more fun!
