Dear fellow BVD members,
Congratulations to those of you who participated in the Ride-a-Test at Autumn Hill on May 18th. We had a great turn-out and everyone seems to have had fun and learned a lot. We owe a big thank you to the Wycoffs, Julie Barringer-Richer and the rest of the Autumn Hill community for donating the use of the facility for this event. Thanks as well to our judge, BVD member Sandy Hotz, and to our volunteers for the day, Beth Geier, Kathie Hibbard, Val Foltz and Samantha Taylor.
Looking ahead this month, in addition to the regular shows, we have two special events to look forward to: the RMDS JR/YR camp, June 19th - 22nd and the USDF Region 5 Team Competition, June 23rd. Both of these activities are designed to combine fun and education in a low-key atmosphere, reminding us all that dressage is about enjoying ourselves and our horses in the company of others who share our enthusiasm. More information about both events can be found on the RMDS website calendar page. Finally, RMDS will be electing new officers in November. We are looking for candidates for President (2 yr term), VP (1 yr term), Secretary (2 yr term)and Treasurer (2yr term). Nominations may be made by contacting me at sarahvbarnes@yahoo.com
Join us for our next BVD meeting, Monday, June 10th at my house, 2394 Rose Ct., Louisville. Everyone is welcome to attend -- we'd love to have you join us!
Have a great ride,
Sarah Sarah Barnes

BVD's Rider Tests Ride-a--Test a Success
by Sandra Hotz
I recently had the pleasure of judging and teaching the BVD Ride-A-Test clinic on May 18th at Autumn Hill Equestrian Center. I am happy to report that the clinic ran smoothly and had excellent attendance: 20 rides!
Each rider performed his/her test which Beth Geier kindly scribed for me. I then gave a short lesson to each rider, highlighting the basic areas needing improvement. All riders were receptive, and everyone improved!
Levels ridden ranged from the new Rider tests to Prix St. Georges. Some riders brought young horses needing exposure, while others brought their older mounts, wishing to improve their scores.
During the short lessons, the emphasis at the lower levels was largely on improving bend and connection, while at the higher levels, improving balance and collection.
All in all it was a fun day full of eager riders, willing horses, and a great atmosphere for learning.
Thank-you to all of those involved in organizing and hosting the clinic!

Kelly Lynch
Kelly has been riding horses since the age of eight. She began on a POA named English Toffee, known to many in Boulder as he was at Triple Creek for many years. Her next mount, was an incredible Quarter Horse named Count, who taught hundreds of kids to ride and became the back-up horse for everyone in the Boulder Valley Pony Club. Each horse brought her new opportunities to learn and grow. Her riding turned from a hobby to a commitment when at age 12 she got her first young horse, a very green 4 year old Saddlebred- Andualsian cross, Armando aka Chinook.
 | Kelly & Chinook |
Mixing a green horse and young rider is usually not the best decision, but with a limited budget, a great vet check, and a lot of support from those around her Kelly and Chinook began their partnership.
Once over the first big hurdle of getting Chinook comfortable in the trailer, Kelly took him home to live on their property. Kelly began trailering him over to work with Maria Wasson. Maria taught her how to build a true partnership with her horse. "There were times in Chinook's early training that I would stand in the middle of the arena with Maria doing hours of ground work before I ever got on. Back then all I could think was when could I get on? But the more I learned the more I realized how important ground work was. Maria taught me that if he's doing something incorrectly on the ground, you can bet he'll be doing the exact same thing when under saddle. That advice has carried me through all of Chinook's training.
Chinook and I are steadily achieving our goals thanks to the training Maria has provided us with. We are happy in our work and I credit Maria with helping us build a foundation of trust between between us. I am grateful to Maria for teaching me the skills necessary to serve us on our way to further accomplishments. Maria is like a second horse mom to me and there's no way I'll be able to pay her back for all that she has taught me over the years."
Kelly and Chinook have come a long way in five years; she has earned her C-1 Pony Club rating and they plan competing at United State Pony Club Dressage Championships in Kansas City this summer. "My goals with Chinook are to earn all my dressage medals and get my A rating in Pony Club, through the dressage specialty track. I hope to be able to share my knowledge I gain from this experience with others."
Kelly has been able to make horses her priority through high school. She attends Jefferson Academy Senior High and will be a senior next year. As a junior she was allowed to use her last class period to train and ride her horse. A daily log of everything done in training each day is kept and then turned in every quarter to earn physical education credit. Kelly has earned her USEF High School Equestrian Letter the past two years by logging 100 riding hours per year and competing in a minimum of 2 USEF recognized or approved shows per year. "This program provides recognition for high school equestrian athletes like myself and I can demonstrate to non-horse people at my school that riding is a full time sport that I am dedicated to."
Kelly is also a very active member of Pony Club at the local and regional levels. She competes as well as mentors younger members within the organization; teaching horse management as a camp counselor for the regional pony club camps each summer. Kelly knows how important it is to give back to the sport she loves and also volunteers at dressage shows and horse trials. After spending many consecutive years helping with the Rocky Mountain Horse Trials she has a true appreciation for the time
and commitment made by each of the volunteers who contribute to the greater equestrian community.
On behalf of BVD we wish you the best of luck
