2013 BVD Volunteer Board Members
Sarah Barnes, President
Sarah has been active in the Boulder Valley dressage and eventing communities since she moved here in 1999.
She teaches and trains at Windy Creek Ranch in Longmont, where she also serves as one of the facility managers. Sarah specializes in using a holistic mind-body approach to work with returning adult riders.
Her teaching incorporates a knowledge of human and equine biomechanics gained from Tai Chi and pilates, as well as hours of watching people and horses move.
Sarah has been active in bringing clinicians to the area, including Eric Smiley, James Shaw and Daniel Stewart. She is looking forward to getting out next season with her young mare, Okotillo.
Stephanie Margulis, Vice President
Stephanie served as our Treasurer last year and has been elected to serve as Vice President for 2013.
Having relocated from the Bay Area in 2010 to Colorado, she served on the board of the San Francisco Peninsula Chapter of the California Dressage Society. She hopes to further promote the appreciation of classical dressage both in and out of the competition arena.
"Owning and operating Sextant Farm has been a childhood dream come true. The closest I got to a horse growing up, were the police horses on the streets of Philadelphia. To be able to listen to them in the silence of the evening, learn their personalities and abundant character, has enriched my understanding of my own horses, and consequently, myself."
Sextant Farm hosted our very successful So Long to Summer Show for the past two years. "It's a little like being at your own wedding, trying to be in the moment."
Tekla II, her Lipizzaner mare (pictured above), purchased having had a saddle on her back only three times before, relied on the training expertise of Don Paulhus and Karl Mikolka. Her Arabian mare, Cal-O-Fiesta, turned thirty this year. "In the twenty years I have had the pleasure to own her, she has crossed the country three times, seeing more of it than I ever have."
Stephanie enjoys dressage, "It's like playing bridge, you never stop learning," and trail riding.
Kathie Hibbard, Secretary
Kathie is volunteering as the BVD Secretary for the third year in a row!
Kathie grew up on a sheep ranch in the Hondo Valley near Roswell, New Mexico and spent most of her childhood with horses. She started riding Snapper a hot little Shetland pony when she was 12 years old. In high school she had a Morgan horse that was the mascot for the New Mexico Military Institute's Broncos football team. They cantered along the sidelines after every touch down and then rode home 4 miles after every game in the dark.
After college and a career at the University of Colorado, Kathie retired on a farm just outside of Boulder near Hygiene.
"I have never looked back in terms of what I would want to do, change or have in my life regarding horses, although sometimes the horse life tests your character!
I am happy and grateful to ride a wonderful mule named Wanda who has taken me on some incredible high country excursions for the last ten years in some of the most spectacular country that Colorado has to offer.
Lately, I have imported all the way from Oregon , a young Oldenburg named Samson who has been a bold, fun trail horse and will soon be doing some dressage."
Beth Geier, Treasurer
Beth has been a BVD Member since 1987. As a founding member she has volunteered and served BVD continuously fulfilling multiple board and committee positions as well as mentoring new board members.
Beth has earned her USDF "L" Judge certification and is active in judging RMDS recognized shows and many Boulder County area schooling shows.
Her combined experience as a BVD Board Member, RMDS Judge and Show Secretary, along with her years performing the administrative role as the Manager of the RMDS Central Office provide BVD with a "go-to" person for answers when questions arise or advice is needed.
Along with her Dutch Gelding, Matador, that she has owned and trained since he was a 3 year old (and is now 19), Beth has climbed the levels and achieved her USDF Bronze Medal in 2001. The pair performed their first PSG test in 2009 at ages 65 and 15. Beth was awarded her USDF Silver Medal in 2010.
