Sharon Gilbert
This summer, I found myself without a horse or dog in the family for the first time in decades, and returned to volunteering for BVD as a form of therapy. I have scribed in the past and loved it, so I decided to hit every show I could this summer. The learning opportunity that goes along with being a scribe is priceless to me; meeting new judges, watching horses and riders perform, and becoming aware of what good/better/best movements look like.
Just being in the show atmosphere made the loss of the spirits I loved a bit easier for me. In a five week span I had to put down my beloved dressage horse, Black Manassis, my wonderful Welsh Corgi lost her battle with cancer, and I myself had emergency surgery.
With Manassis and Pepsi gone from my life and routine, I wanted to stay connected to dressage and the people who love the discipline and the experience as much as I do.
Was it a coincidence that Welsh Corgis were in abundance at the shows this year?
It is an honor to be recognized for something I love doing as I always leave a show with more knowledge than I came with.
This year, volunteering with BVD has been a way to recover from the losses in my life, and to help me look at big black horses and stubby little Corgis with a smile and precious memories, and not so many tears.
Thank you to Sharon and to all of our BVD Members
who we see volunteering at shows locally and
in neighboring communities!

Jeannette Hillary
Jeannette Hillery has always had a love of horses, but didn't get into serious riding or ownership until almost 50 - we don't discuss age. She owns her fourth horse, Dan, who enjoys trail riding, but not always training for dressage.
When Jeannette first started looking at equestrian disciplines, the most interesting was dressage, impressing her with the elegance and affinity between horse and rider.
At first, understanding some of the dressage show rules was confusing. She felt that one way to learn and understand these rules, along with making shows more interesting and friendly for participants, was to volunteer to be a show manager. Jeannette, along with Beth Geier, manage our BVD Chapter's Spring Fling and So Long to Summer horse shows and have been running these shows together for a number of years.
About 7 years ago, Jeannette trained to be an RMDS Technical Delegate who can serve at any Training to Second level shows in the region. This has afforded her the opportunity to meet wonderful people and watch beautifiul horses.
Jeannette has resided in Boulder since 1993, and is active in the League of Women Voters, singing in the Boulder Chorale and doing weekly pilates and kangoo.
Thank you Jeannette, for your years of service and valuable contributions to the success of our chapter!
