Saint Joseph Celebrated During June

In June, we celebrate St. Joseph, the spouse of Mary and the Father of Jesus. The life of St. Joseph serves as a model: his role as a husband and head of the Holy Family. You will recall when Joseph found out Mary, his fiancé, was pregnant, he wanted to divorce her. But then he received a message from an angel. He then sacrificed personal honor and reputation to obey God and protected Mary and Jesus.

On June 19 as we celebrate Father's Day, may we take the time to recognize our fathers who answered "yes" to the vocation of fatherhood. May we understand the sacrifices they made for us, how they serve as our protectors from harm, and the guidance they provide. May we find inspiration in the special role they play in our lives and in bringing us closer to God. Please pray for our Holy Father, and for your fathers, grandfathers and godfathers.

A Blessing for Fathers from the Book of Blessings
God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless these men, that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.

The Diocese of Palm Beach wishes
a Happy and Blessed Father's 's Day to All!

In the Words of Bishop Barbarito

Bishop Barbarito
Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito

At the end of May we celebrate the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In Bishop Barbarito's latest column Living the Truth in Love: The Visitations of Mary. Bishop Barbarito discusses the feast day on May 31 that our Church celebrates

"The Visitation of Our Lady is significant because throughout the Gospels, whenever Mary is mentioned, it is always while she is doing some visitation. She is a woman who goes out in order to bring the joy of her Son to others.  The one time we find Our Lady at home is when the Angel Gabriel visits her to announce that she is to be the Mother of God.  From that point onward, we always find her on visitations."

As Bishop Barbarito further explains,
through many of Mary's visitations found in the Bible,

"we realize that Mary, truly as Our Mother, visits us in a special way to bring the mercy of her Son to us in our lives."

Fortnight for Freedom 2016 to Feature
New Resources and a Relic Tour

Fortnight2016

At the end of June, our Church will once again focus on religious liberty and religious freedom during the Fortnight for Freedom: Witnesses to Freedom, which will take place June 21 to July 4. The theme this year -- Witnesses to Freedom -- will focus on the lives of women and men of faith, from all over the world, who have borne witness to authentic freedom in Christ.

This two-week time period is designed to promote the importance of preserving the essential right of religious freedom, for now and the future, for Catholics and for those of all faiths. The fortnight also promotes prayer, education and public action.

There are a few new items this year such as a national tour of relics of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, both martyrs of the English Reformation, which will make just one stop in Florida -- in the Archdiocese of Miami at the Church of the Little Flower Church in Coral Gables on June 18 & 19.

The Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty is working with Stonyhurst College to bring the relics to the U.S. during the Fortnight for Freedom: Witnesses to Freedom, which begins June 21 - vigil of the saints' feast day - and concludes July 4. Stonyhurst College in England is home to the relics. The faithful are encouraged to consider making a pilgrimage to Coral Gables to venerate the relics.

The Fortnight for Freedom occurs annually at a time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power, including St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher. More and Fisher were prominent 16th century Englishmen who are known for opposing King Henry VIII's divorce and attempted supremacy over the Catholic Church. Ultimately, it was their refusal to sign an oath of supremacy that led them to be charged with treason and executed.

Both More and Fisher were patriots. They never rose up to incite rebellion or foment revolution. They were no traitors. But when the law of the king came into conflict with the law of Christ, they chose Christ. These men gave their lives for the freedom of the Church and for freedom of conscience. They bear witness to the truth that no government can make a claim on a person's soul.

The Relic Tour will be at the parish in Coral Gables on June 18 & 19 for nearly 24 hours, accompanied by the Sisters of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary, starting in the morning of Sunday, June 19. Also on June 19, there will be Morning Mass at 10:30 a.m. which will be celebrated by Archbishop Thomas Wenski.

Other new items this year include:
  • 14 stories of "Witnesses to Freedom," which highlight individual men and women from the past and present who have witnessed to the faith in extraordinary ways, including St. Edith Stein, Bl. Oscar Romero, the Coptic Christian martyrs, and the Little Sisters of the Poor.
  • New video on "The Right to Religious Freedom", explaining Church teaching on religious freedom and highlighting current challenges to religious freedom, including the HHS mandate and global religious persecution. The video was produced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dignitatis Humanae, the Second Vatican Council's declaration on religious liberty, which was promulgated in December 1965. The video also has a Discussion Guide for parishes that may wish to show the video.
