May is the Month for Mothers

The month of May is traditionally devoted to Mary, our Blessed Mother. The Diocese of Palm Beach begins the month with its Marian Festival which is always held on the first Sunday of May and pays honor to our great Mother with a procession of more than 30 different Marian images, paintings, statues and banners from around the world, a rosary and more. This year's festival patroness was Our Lady of Guadalupe,the patroness of the unborn. Look for an inspiring article on this event in the next issue of the Florida Catholic which will come out next week.

The great affection for the Blessed Mother and for all mothers is reflected in Pope Francis' recent Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation called The Joy of Love or Amoris Laetitia. In it, Pope Francis has this message for mothers:
 
"Without mothers, not only would there be no new faithful, but the faith itself would lose a good part of its simple and profound warmth. . . . Dear mothers: thank you!"

This month you can join in an extension of the Prayer Campaign for Life by praying that the Blessed Virgin Mary's example inspire us to authentic love graced with generosity and respect. Though the 9 Days for Life Novena is normally prayed during the month of January near the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, the U.S. Bishops invite you to continue praying for life year-round, in particular at a time during the month of May. Congratulations Graduates!

May is also a time of graduations in the diocese and not just the graduation of our high school students.

On Wednesday, May 11 at 7 p.m. the Diocese of Palm Beach will hold Scf logospecial Mass to celebrate those who have completed courses in the School of Christian Formation. During the past three years, these graduates completed the entire School of Christian Formation Curriculum. The entire faith community is invited to join in this celebration which will be held at the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola in Palm Beach Gardens. Those who take a formation class or are in the process of completing three-year curriculum course are invited to be part of the congregation as well as family and friends are invited to be part of the congregation at this celebratory Mass.

The School of Christian Formation seeks to make its programs accessible to adult Catholics in the diocese who are interested in taking a few classes to learn more about the faith we receive at baptism, enhancing their preparation for ministry. It offers many different classes and programs in English and Spanish on different days of the week. Classes cost just $10 and provide introductions to the major topics and historical periods of the Catholic faith. Classes will begin again in August. Shortly after that graduation Mass the Diocese of Palm Beach will hold another -- the Annual Graduation Mass for High School Seniors on Sunday, May 15 at 5 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola. This Mass is for all high school seniors whether you attend a diocesan school or a public high school. Celebrant Bishop Barbarito will congratulate the students and provide a special blessing. A light reception will be held afterward in the parish hall. 
 
This week there is a special Registration Deadline for high school seniors to RSVP and to be recognized at the Mass. Graduating Seniors were asked to RSVP by Thursday, May 5 to their parish office/Youth Minister/School Coordinator to provide the names and the number of family and friends who will attend this special Mass and Reception. If you did not yet RSVP, please do so before Monday. 
 
We also recognize that some of our former students who are now young adults will be graduating this month from college. There are also students who are graduating from middle school so in honor of all graduates.....

Month's Mind Requiem Mass

Jubilee Celebration for Religious

Religious celebrating milestone anniversaries of 50, 60 and 65 years will be recognized by celebrant Bishop Barbarito. A special by-invitation- only dinner for only Jubilarians, will follow.

Annual Memorial Day Mass

Memorial DayDate & Time: May 30, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Location: Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery, Royal Palm Beach
The diocesan cemetery will celebrate its annual Memorial Day Mass with His Excellency, the Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito, as the main celebrant.  All clergy, parishioners, and families of the Diocese of Palm Beach are invited to attend this Mass. This Mass is offered for all of those who have died in service to our country and for all of those who have served in the military.  A light reception will follow.A limited amount of seating will be provided so you are invited to bring your own chair, if so desired.

Annual Diocesan Encuentro to Focus on Integration and the National Encuentro

The Diocese of Palm Beach's Hispanic Ministry will hold its annual bi-lingual Encuentro (Encounter) on Sunday, May 22 from Noon (12 p.m.) - 6 p.m. at St. Ann Church in West Palm Beach. For 29 years, the Office of Hispanic Ministry has planned this diocesan event which allows participants to come together and feel the sense of being a diocesan family, and to encourage our parish ministries to renew their commitment to serve our brothers and sisters in their families, work, and daily life situations in a "Pastoral de Conjunto," in a "togetherness". We journey together as a Church and we need many workers in the vineyard of the Lord.

This year the Encuentro is focused on the INTEGRATION OF ALL CHURCH MINISTRIES. We expect to have representatives from all ministries in parishes that have a Hispanic Ministry. Fr. Rafael Capo and a team from the Southeast Pastoral Institute in Miami will lead us.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is convening a National V Encuentro to be held in 2018 with the theme: "Missionary Disciples: Witnesses of God's Love." Our XXIX Encuentro will begin our diocese's preparation and participation for the National V Encuentro.

Fashion Workshops for Teenage Girls
Dates & Locations: June 8-10 at St. Joan of Arc Church in Boca Raton; July 27-29 at St. Lucie Chuch in Port St. Lucie; and August 3-5 at St. Mary Church in Pahokee.
Catholic Charities Birthline/Lifeline Ministry announces the return this summer of the Style For Life Fashion Program which will be held at three diocesan Churches. Style for Life offers a unique three-day workshop designed for teenage girls. The topics presented are designed to promote self-confidence. Each workshop ends with a Fashion Runway Show open to the public that showcases what the teenagers have learned at the workshop. There is Registration Fee that is considered a donation to the Birthline/Lifeline Ministry.

New Guide Released for Upcoming Elections




 
 
   
Approved by the bishops of Florida, the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops (FCCB) have released a new, updated version of the Election and Political Activities Guide. Similar to its earlier version, it identifies guidelines and appropriate activity for parish and pastor involvement in election related activities. One of the changes to note in the latest version is the guidelines for  conducting Voter Registration Drives.

The new guideline and other resources to help our faith community discern their vote are available on the diocesan website or the FCCB website.  


Looking for the Candidate Questionnaire Project?
The Candidate Questionnaire Project is a document that provides a summary of how our the candidates running for office stand on several issues of importance to our faith community. The FCCB plans to release a CQP for the upcoming elections (August 30 Primary Election & November 8 General Election.) When the CQPs are released, you will be able to find it on the FCCB web site and on this diocesan web page.  We will keep you posted!

 
 
   
 Fortnight for Freedom 2016 to Feature
 New Resources and a Relic Tour

In June, our Church will once again focus on religious liberty and religious freedom during the Fortnight for Freedom: Witnesses to Freedom, which will take place June 21 to July 4. The theme this year -- Witnesses to Freedom -- will focus on the lives of women and men of faith, from all over the world, who have borne witness to authentic freedom in Christ.

This two-week time period is designed to promote the importance of preserving the essential right of religious freedom, for now and the future, for Catholics and for those of all faiths. The fortnight also promotes prayer, education and public action.
 
 
A few new items this year:
  • A national tour of relics of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, both martyrs of the English Reformation, including  a stop in the Province of Florida. The tour will be at the Church of the Little Flower Church in Coral Gables on June 18 & 19. The Diocese of Palm Beach will provide information and any updates on the tour on our online Events Calendar on the diocesan website.
  • 14 stories of "Witnesses to Freedom," which highlight individual men and women from the past and present who have witnessed to the faith in extraordinary ways, including St. Edith Stein, Bl. Oscar Romero, the Coptic Christian martyrs, and the Little Sisters of the Poor.
  • New video on "The Right to Religious Freedom", explaining Church teaching on religious freedom and highlighting current challenges to religious freedom, including the HHS mandate and global religious persecution. The video was produced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dignitatis Humanae, the Second Vatican Council's declaration on religious liberty, which was promulgated in December 1965. The video also has a Discussion Guide for parishes that may wish to show the video.

The Fortnight for Freedom occurs annually at a time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power, including St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome.

Sonshine TEC (To Encounter Christ) is a Catholic retreat ministry focused upon young adults of the Archdiocese of Miami and the Diocese of Palm Beach.This young adult weekend retreat is for all young adults married and single ages 18-29. Retreat cost $120. Reservations required.

5th Annual Marian Eucharistic Conference at Ave Maria University
Dates: May 20 - 22, starts at 4 pm. on May 20

All are invited to attend this annual conference devoted to the Year of Mercy. Some of the featured speakers include Fr. Chris Alar MIC, Director of the Association of Marian Helpers; EWTN's Steve Ray; Sisters of Mary; Tom Peterson of Catholics Come Home; and more.
