Fortnight for Freedom to be Observed & Celebrated in All Catholic Dioceses
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is encouraging Catholic dioceses and parishes across the country to raise awareness for domestic and international religious freedom concerns during the fourth annual Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Bear Witness that begins on Sunday, June 21, ends on Saturday, July 4 - Independence Day. The two-week celebration will focus on the theme Freedom to Bear Witness to the truth of the Gospel, and will emphasize the freedom to serve the poor and vulnerable with human dignity and the Church's teaching.
Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Bear Witness occurs during a special time in our Catholic's liturgical calendar when we celebrate great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power-St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, John the Baptist, Peter and Paul and the first martyrs of the Church of Rome. The two-week time period is designed to be a time of prayer and reflection upon the freedom of religion which we possess in our great nation. June 21 is the vigil of Feasts of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher.
In the Diocese of Palm Beach, parishes are encouraged to plan special Masses, talks and events to celebrate the Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Bear Witness and the faithful are encouraged to Pray, Education and Take Action for the protection of the conscience rights of all. To help you, the diocese has posted on its website several resources from the USCCB such as:
Parish Resources: Suggestions as to how parishes can observe the Fortnight for Freedom such as parish picnics and movie nights. This resource includes a list of 14 Ways to celebrate Fortnight for Freedom.
Prayer Resources: Find a Litany for Liberty, daily reflections and more.
Knowledge = Understanding Resources:
Find information and one-page fact sheets to educate yourself about threats to religious freedom, and find out what the Religious Freedom Restoration Act does -- and doesn't.
Find the above resources and more on the diocese's Fortnight for Freedom web page: www.diocesepb.org/fortnight2015

In April, dozens of people gathered for prayer at the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola for a peaceful vigil and powerful witness to defend traditional marriage. The vigil was held on the night before the Supreme Court justices heard oral arguments to decide the legal definition of marriage. (LINDA REEVES |FC)
|
Before this month is over, the Supreme Court is expected to announce its ruling on the legal definition of marriage. As the Supreme Court deliberates, the faithful may wish to pray for the good of marriage. One such prayer is the Prayer in Defense of Marriage from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and found on the USCCB's website. *** New: "Journey to the Heart of Family" videos in which individuals share their own stories cherishing marriage, what it means to them, and how their personal experiences have enriched their bond of marriage and family. Celebrate Father's Day!

In June, we celebrate St. Joseph, the spouse of Mary and the Father of Jesus. The life of St. Joseph serves as a model: his role as a husband and head of the Holy Family. You will recall when Joseph found out Mary, his fiancé, was pregnant, he wanted to divorce her. But then he received a message from an angel. He then sacrificed personal honor and reputation to obey God and protected Mary and Jesus.
On June 21 as we celebrate Father's Day, may we take the time to recognize our fathers who answered "yes" to the vocation of fatherhood. May we understand the sacrifices they made for us, how they serve as our protectors from harm, and the guidance they provide. May we find inspiration in the special role they play in our lives and in bringing us closer to God. Please pray for our Holy Father, and for your fathers, grandfathers and godfathers.
A Happy and Blessed Father's Day to all!
A Blessing for Fathers from the Book of Blessings
God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless these men, that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.

Recent Bishop Barbarito's Column
In this week's Living the Truth in Love column, Bishop Barbarito suggests that we follow the lead of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, in his devotion to our Heavenly Mother Mary. As Bishop Barbarito explains, Pope Francis devotion is done so in very simple ways. These ways are pointed out so that we may be like Pope Francis, and develop our own devotion to Mary.
Below is Bishop Barbarito's June 5 column published in this week's Florida Catholic newspaper and posted on the diocesan website as well as his May 22 column.

The Papal Visit to the U.S. in September
Anticipation is starting to build for the World Meeting of Families to take place in Philadelphia September 22-27. Held every three years and sponsored by the Holy See's Pontifical Council for the Family, the World Meeting of Families is the world's largest Catholic gathering of families. Each World Meeting of Families has a theme that energizes and enlivens the event while adding great depth of meaning to our understanding of families. There is daily Mass, devotions, keynote addresses and multiple breakout sessions. There is also a Youth Conference for young people ages 6 to 17 who attend with their families.
The theme of the World Meeting of Families - Philadelphia 2015 is "Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive" which emphasizes the impact of the love and life of families on our society.
Catholics are also excited for the visit to the United States by Pope Francis which will be September 23-27. The Holy Father will visit New York City, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia. Before coming to America, Pope Francis will visit Cuba.

Prayer to Avert Hurricanes
The Most Reverend Gerald M. Bishop is asking all parishes and schools in the diocese to join him a united prayer effort in thanksgiving for the past several calm hurricane seasons and for our protection from devastating storms in the 2015 season. Below is a prayer to avert storms that you and your families can use throughout the hurricane season.
Thank you for your support of our prayer effort to ask God to keep us safe from hurricanes in this upcoming season.
(SUGGESTED PRAYER FOR PROTECTION FROM STORMS)
God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us in the coming seasons. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank you in advance, for you are our only Refuge. We ask this through Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us.

Year of Consecrated Life
The Catholic Church continues to celebrate a Year of Consecrated Life invoked by Pope Francis. Begun on the First Sunday of Advent and concluding on February 2, 2016, the Year of Consecrated Life is a time for all to celebrate: it is a renewal for men and women in consecrated life and a time of thanksgiving among the faithful for the men and women in the Diocese of Palm Beach who live a consecrated life. The theme for the Year of Consecrated Life is "Wake Up the World."
In addition to praying the Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is encouraging the faithful to spend these months promoting "Days with Religious" initiatives and resources to help families learn about the consecrated life of religious men and women. Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life
O God, throughout the ages you have called women and men to pursue lives of perfect charity through the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks for these courageous witnesses of Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of ourselves to you. Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons and daughters who, having found the pearl of great price, treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
