Alleluia! The Easter Celebration Continues

Silhouettes of family and people at the cross of Jesus.

Our observance of the Easter Season continues. There are 50 days of Easter from the first Sunday (Easter Sunday) to Pentecost Sunday which is the day of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. Some regard the Pentecost as the birth of the Church because it is from that point on the apostles carried the message of Christ to the whole world.

The Easter Season is characterized, above all, by the joy of glorified life and the victory over death, expressed most fully in the great resounding cry of the Christian:  Alleluia! All faith flows from faith in the resurrection: In First Corinthians, it states:

"If Christ has not been raised, then empty is our preaching; empty, too, is your faith." (1 Cor 15:14)

Throughout the Easter Season, you will notice the glow of the Paschal Candle on the altar as it will be lit during all Masses of the Easter Season. The Paschal Candle is lit during the Easter Vigil and is a central symbol of Christ and His divine light. To gain a deeper understanding, we suggest reading about the Exsultet, which is the Proclamation of Easter and provides some background on the Paschal Candle. You may also find of interest a Reflection on the Exsultet by Father Michael J. Flynn of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Another observance during Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday, which takes this Sunday, April 12, the second Sunday of Easter. This day was designated by Pope John Paul II in 2000. The observance of Divine Mercy Sunday comes from Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska  who had visions of Jesus saying he would show mercy to those who prayed for it and shared it with others. Catholics worldwide will celebrate the day, including parishes in our diocese (please see the third article on Divine Mercy Sunday).

In a recent Living the Truth in Love column, Bishop Barbarito writes about Mercy, telling us how mercy is a reminder of the depth of God's love for us.

"Mercy is a reminder of the depth of God's love for us.  God created us out of love but redeemed us out of mercy.  Mercy is truly the expression of forgiveness and God's forgiveness is unlimited.  Mercy is the aspect of God's love which reveals how much our love for God means to Him.  He gave His Son in order that we might turn to Him in a real and loving relationship.  In His extraordinary encyclical,  Dives in Misericordia, which is on the mercy of God, St. Pope John Paul II expressed how God cannot reveal Himself in any other manner but mercy.  He wrote, 'For mercy is an indispensable dimension of love; it is as if it were love's second name and at the same time, the specific manner in which love is revealed and affected vis-à-vis the reality of evil that is in the world.'

In Dives in Misericordia, St. Pope John Paul II reflected upon another extraordinary revelation of mercy in the life of Mary.  He expressed that 'Mary is also the one who obtained mercy in a particular and exceptional way, as no other person has.'  At first this seems surprising since Mary was completely free from sin.  We might wonder how she could obtain mercy when she was one who did not need it.  However, St. Pope John Paul II explained that Mary allowed herself to receive the free gifts of God which she knew she did not deserve.  In accepting these gifts she accepted the mercy of God in a manner that not only acknowledged God's abundance but her limitations.  In this she reveals to us how God desires to share His love in a lavish way with all of us no matter what our limitations may be."

Easter Sunday Mass to be Rebroadcast This
 Sunday, April 12

Estrella TV - West Palm Beach will rebroadcast this Sunday, April 12, the Diocese of Palm Beach's Catholic Easter Mass that originally aired last week on Easter Sunday morning. Due to a technical glitch, the hour-long Easter Mass was interrupted half way through the liturgy. The diocese produces and airs the Mass for the benefit of the community and especially for those who are sick, homebound and unable to physically attend Mass in a Catholic Church.

Estrella-TV plans to air the hour-long Easter Mass immediately following the airing of the diocese's weekly half-hour Mass. The diocese's weekly Mass will air at its normal time this Sunday, April 12, starting at 9 a.m. and immediately following that Mass the rebroadcast of the Easter Mass will begin. The rebroadcast of the Easter Mass will begin around 9:30 a.m. and will run until 10:30 a.m.

The Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito, Bishop of Palm Beach, was the main celebrant of the Easter Mass and music for the liturgy was provided by the Seminary Choir from the St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach. The Mass was taped in the studio at Parallax Productions in West Palm Beach which produces the diocese's weekly Mass and several of its diocesan videos.

Estrella TV is a Spanish-language American TV station with both English and Spanish-speaking viewers. The diocesan Masses air in English.

"The Diocese of Palm Beach's television ministry is important to those who are homebound, in a hospital or nursing home and are unable to physically attend Mass. I know our regular viewers were disappointed when the Mass was suddenly interrupted and ended. Fortunately, the station, Estrella TV - West Palm Beach, worked with the Diocese of Palm Beach to make amends so now the viewers will be able to see the hour-long Easter Mass in its entirety. When they tune in this Sunday, they will have two Masses to watch," said Dianne Laubert, director of communications, Diocese of Palm Beach.

Estrella TV can be found on Comcast Channels 208 & 616; AT&T/U-Verse** 3024; Hometown Cable Plus on 197; and Estrella's over-the-air channel or Digital Antenna is 25.2. Estrella does not air on DirectTV or Dish.

The Diocese of Palm Beach does post on its website the celebrant's homily from each of its weekly Masses. Bishop Barbarito's Easter Homily is among those posted and available for viewing. To view the homilies, please visit

***

**A special notice for U-Verse customers: some customers are experiencing problems viewing Estrella TV on 3024. AT&T is working on the issue. In the meantime, you may wish to purchase a low-cost Digital Antenna ($8-$20) that sits on top of the TV to watch the Easter and weekly televised Mass.

The Divine Mercy Sunday is Sunday, April 12

Divine Mercy Sunday takes place this Sunday, April 12, the second Sunday of Easter. The message of Divine Mercy was first promoted by the Polish Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska in the 1930s. Catholics believe that Jesus chose the humble nun to receive private revelations concerning Divine Mercy that she recorded in her diary.  On May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of St. Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday.

Catholics worldwide will celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. In the Diocese of Palm Beach, some parishes will have special programs and feature talks explaining the feast, the image, a special prayer, a nine-day novena and a plenary indulgence or pardon from suffering for sins.

Holy Oils, Priestly Vocation and Church Tradition Celebrated at the Annual Chrism Mass

Chrism Blessing
As part of the blessing of the oils, Bishop Barbarito breaths the Holy Spirit into the Chrism Oil. (photo copyright FC/DPB)

Hundreds of faithful filled the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola on March 31 for the annual Chrism Mass held during Holy Week. During this Mass, Bishop Barbarito blessed the three oils that will be used for sacramental purposes during the next year through the diocese's 53 churches and missions. In addition the blessing, the gathered priests renew their vows and those with significant ordination anniversaries were recognized.

During his homily, Bishop Barbarito discussed how as we gathered for the Chrism Mass, we were involved in movements of gravity and grace. Bishop referenced a series of personal reflections called "Gravity and Grace" by a 20th-century French philosopher and religious thinker Simone Weil whose premise is that the world is controlled by the natural movement of gravity and the supernatural movement of grace. Gravity keeps us bound to this earth while grace moves us beyond the laws of gravity into the realm of God. Gravity draws things down while grace makes them rise.

Stated Bishop Barbarito:

"During this Mass, we will consecrate and bless the natural elements controlled by gravity - oils. These oils will be used during the coming year in liturgical ceremonies around our diocese to activate moments of supernatural grace. These natural elements will become vehicles of God's grace."

During Mass, the first oil blessed is that of the sick to bring the comfort and healing of Christ himself to those suffering with illness and the second oil is that of the catechumens that will be used to welcome the baptized and others into our Church.

It is the third oil blessed, the Chrism oil, that is used for anointing and ordinations. In Bishop Barbarito's homily, bishop stated it is the Chrism that sets the priest apart as anointed:

.."That is what the name, Christ, means. Indeed the priest is set apart, like Christ, to be a vehicle of grace. Through all the sacramental actions, most especially the Eucharist, the priest stands firmly in this world by the force of gravity and reveals where grace is present, while he transforms those places where it is not."

Bishop Barbarito's Chrism Mass Homily is his latest Living the Truth in Love column. Please click here to read it in its entirety.

Prayer for Vocations

Each year, the Fourth Sunday of Easter is designated as the annual World Day of Prayer for Vocations. This year it will be observed on Sunday, April 26. All the faithful throughout the world are asked to participate. This day is an opportunity for all to raise awareness of the need for men and women to say yes to their vocations, especially if one is called to the priesthood or religious life.

Below is a Prayer for Vocations from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. On the diocese's Office of Vocations web page, you will find prayers for vocations, including those for those discerning, a parent's prayer for vocations and a prayer to know your vocation.

Prayer for Vocations (a prayer from the USCCB)

God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son's Kingdom as priests, deacons, religious, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help us respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

Prayer for Vocations (the prayer of the diocesan Office of Vocations

Father, you call each of us by name and ask us to follow you. Bless your Church by raising up dedicated leaders from our families and friends in the Diocese of Palm Beach who will generously serve your people as sisters, brothers, deacons and priests. Inspire us as we grow to know you, and open our hearts to hear your call. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord. Amen.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month

Safe Environments

April is designated as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This month serves as a reminder of the call to be instruments of justice, working for the common good of all, which includes the provision of healing for those who have suffered as victims of abuse. As Jesus entrusts to Peter the care of the flock, we are reminded that this responsibility belongs to everyone as a matter of charity and justice. Child Abuse Prevention Month should lead to heightened awareness of the need to be vigilant about providing a safe environment for all within the Church and for the world.

Our diocese has policies, procedures and codes of conduct to create a safe environment and protect children. These are to be followed by adults. Reading and following these codes and policies in all situations creates a culture of protection and keeps our children safer. These are available in English and Spanish on our Office of Safe Environments web pages.

Also on our Safe Environments web pages, you'll find tips and resources to keep your kids safe while traveling at amusement parks, online, while home alone and more! Be sure to look at these tips.

Year of Consecrated Life

The Catholic Church continues to celebrate a Year of Consecrated Life invoked by Pope Francis. Begun on the First Sunday of Advent and concluding on February 2, 2016, the Year of Consecrated Life is a time for all to celebrate: it is a renewal for men and women in consecrated life and a time of thanksgiving among the faithful for the men and women in the Diocese of Palm Beach who live a consecrated life. The theme for the Year of Consecrated Life is "Wake Up the World."

In addition to praying the Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is encouraging the faithful to spend these months promoting "Days with Religious" initiatives and resources to help families learn about the consecrated life of religious men and women. To learn more, visit www.usccb.org/cclv

Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life

O God, throughout the ages you have called women and men to pursue lives of perfect charity through the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks for these courageous witnesses of Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of ourselves to you. Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons and daughters who, having found the pearl of great price, treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
