Faithful Community to Gather
This Month to Pray for the
End of the Death Penalty
The faithful are asked to gather on Thursday, February 26, at 5:30 p.m. for a prayer vigil to end the use of death penalty. The prayer vigil will begin a half-hour before the scheduled execution for death row inmate Jerry Correll. In January Governor Rick Scott signed Correll's death warrant, the 22nd warrant the governor has signed while in office.
The prayer vigil will be held at the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola in Palm Beach Gardens and will begin a half hour before the scheduled 6 p.m. execution of Correll.
Catholic faithful and members of the community are invited to gather in solidarity to pray for the victims of violent crimes and their families, for persons on death row awaiting execution, and for the end of the use of the death penalty.
Catholic Charities Respect Life Office in partnership with the Diocese of Palm Beach and Pax Christi will host a prayer service starting at 5:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Cathedral. The service will be followed by a procession and silent vigil in front of the Cathedral from 5:45 - 6:15 p.m. Look for the prayer vigil group on the corner and their banner "State sponsored killing is wrong."
Each (arch)diocese in the state will hold a prayer vigil that night, with some conducting prayer vigils at multiple locations.
Correll was sentenced to death in 1986 for the stabbing of his ex-wife, their five-year-old daughter, and two former in-laws.
The U.S. bishops have been advocating against the death penalty for more than 40 years. In 2005, they initiated the Campaign to End the Use of the Death Penalty and continue to work closely with state Catholic Conferences, the Catholic Mobilizing Network and other groups towards the abolition of the death penalty in the United States.
